Statins are not particularly effective at reducing the risk of dying from heart disease, a study claims.
Scientists analysed 35 studies into the effects of the drugs which lower 'bad' LDL cholesterol and found the pills have no consistent benefit.
The research, published in the British Medical Journal, found three quarters of all trials reported no reduction in mortality among those who took the drugs.
And half of all studies suggested that cholesterol-busting pills did not prevent heart attacks or strokes.
The research flies in the face of decades of medical advice. Authors claimed doctors have overlooked evidence that suggests statins, which are routinely prescribed to people at risk of heart disease, are not effective.
Around 8million people in Britain and 35million in the US take statins. They are thought to prevent heart attacks and strokes by lowering levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood.
Statins are routinely prescribed to people thought to be at risk of heart disease, including those with diabetes, high blood pressure and over-75s.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid aka ALA. Been on it for about a year. From my research its used in Germany at 1800 mgm PO QD for blood sugar control. I chose to be more conservative and use only 1200 mgm PO QD. One side effect it causes your urine to have a an odor similar to what asparagus does but its transitory.
I was pre-diabetic with H1AC’s in the mid to high 6’s. Last test was H1AC from about 6.4 to 5.6 the top of the normal range. My weight has dropped from ~179lb to 160lb. I also supplement with Psyllium Husks 1 TBS in 8 to 12 oz of H20 aka (metamucil). The taste is bland but I like grits so not so bad. YMMV.
For at least two weeks, remove all nightshades from your diet. Those are things like tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant—these are the main dietary nightshades. You can do anything for two weeks, right? If you feel better, great. If not, it was worth a shot and it can’t harm you.
Also, read up on lectins. There are high concentrations in nightshade foods but are also found in beans and peanuts. You might consider when you do your two week test dropping beans and peanuts also.
I did this test, didn’t know about lectins then so didn’t quit beans and peanuts, not that I ever ate much of them, and was astonished at how much better I felt. It was strange at first, everything seemed so bland, but there are tons of other foods. I haven’t eaten a potato in about 15 years. BTW, sweet potatoes and yams are fine to eat, as is ground black pepper, all of which are not in the nightshade family.
I do now occasionally have pizza. Not eating tomatoes is the hardest for me. They are in everything, everything good that is. I hope it works for you. What have you got to lose?
They build up in the artery walls to plug lesions. It's a healing process. The problem isn't the this response, the problem is the lesions that require it. Those are a symptom of chronic inflammation, not excess cholesterol. You don't get plaques just because you have a lot of extra cholesterol floating around.
"I am trying to stay off of statins, but my cholesterol is sky high, regardless of significant dietary and lifestyle changes."
I know nothing about your circumstances, but I'll point out that some people have abnormally high cholesterol. It's called hypercholesterolemia. It is not necessarily a danger, since again, heart disease is not a function of elevated cholesterol.
Out of curiosity... What were you taking for the arthritis? I had a stroke years ago, went through more tests than you could shake a stick at... Nothing wrong... I was sent to an oncologist...ran every test you could think of... nothing... finally she found the answer... It was caused by the drug I was taking for arthritis....
Hope this helps....
on statins in Heathline
....That could explain why statins cause side effects like brain fog and memory loss that usually stop when people get off them, and why statins cause significant fatigue, especially for women. Statins weaken your mitochondria, which contributes to fatigue and brain fog. That’s the first reason to avoid them.

On Lisinopril-—I took it a couple of weeks and had to stop. I honestly can’t remember which side effects did it but I like olmesartan medoxomil now, but that’s just me. Don’t know about anyone else.
I have no medical knowledge. I shouldn’t be spouting off here.
Hope you find relief and help.

I was taking methotrexate, but was off of it when I had the stroke. It was probably the DFAC chow in Afghanistan that did me in! LOL
I havent seen much improvement, and my doc keeps pushing the biologics. Really, Im doing pretty well, considering Im still working after five years. I dont figure Im that bad, but some days I wonder!
His cholesterol is 183.
He is 80 years old, normal weight, on no perception medication.
His choice what he does of course but I lean toward suggesting he tells them no.
Back surgery, less than 30% effective, is the hysterectomy of our day. Clinical norms are frequently moved in the direction that favors treatment for as many as possible. I believe that.
“Lies My Doctor Told Me”
Dr Ken Berry
I am off all Meds, lost 65lbs (not necessarily in that order)
As a 65 yr old White Male that just a few years ago ON many MEDS my own Dentist wouldn’t even clean my teeth because of my High BP... I now have Zero problems have “sorta normal BP” (just measured it this minute 139/82 (not ideal) but beats the crap out of my 195/105 when I had to take BP meds)
Cholesterol is not a concern as I eat enough Saturated Fat from good clean sources (I do not consume Any Vegetable Oil on purpose) I always want my Omega 3 (Cod Liver Oil), got to where I actually like the taste
Basically I just quit eating Sugars and Vegetable Oils everything kinda just fixed itself after that (and I lost 65lbs of belly aka visceral fat). Pants from a 42” Waist to 36”... from XXL to L on my shirts.
Low Carb Beer is a blessing because unflavored water gets boring ;^)
*** “Everyone needs to study hyperinsulanemia and insulin resistance. It leads to diabetes, heart disease and dementia. Cholesterol is an essential human hormone and statins are snake oil” ***
Dr Fung, Dr Mason are 2 excellent starting points
BTW
*** “i dont take any pharmaceuticals” ***
I don’t either because it is stupid to treat symptoms and not address the source.
Go to a Veterinarian with your animal and what is the first question “What are you feeding it?”
People Doctors want to know what the Symptoms are because they have a couple Prescriptions they can write, won’t fix anything but the symptoms.
I use my Dr for his suture skills (because my Vet won’t sew me up)
Lay off carbohydrates.
Long term statin use also has links to ALS.
Ill pass.
I take Naicin to naturally lower my chlorestrol.
Stopped taking Aspirin since that puts holes in your veins. Chlorestrol is what fixes those holes and then builds and builds till you have a blockage.
Check NNT.COM this stands for necessary need to treat and every drug has an NNT score. Statins have an NNT score of 106 to 125. This means 106 to 125 people have to take that statin drug for 5 YEARS to prevent ONE HEART ATTACK!!!
Statins also give people diabetes too!
A meta analysis done in in Isreal found if you drink 8oz a day of pomegranite juice for 3 years you can reduce your blockage by 17%.
Do your own research as i have done and get yourself off the legal drug merry go round pushed by profit driven corrupt drug companies. They are killing people and getting away with it
I was taking enbrel for years and it was working... My doctor switched me to humira, and 9 months later, stroke... Then a pe..... once off the humira, not a problem... Biologics work, just be careful with them
I forgot to add 2 points. The Naicin i use is NON FLUSHING. This prevents hot flashes.
Aspirin causes holes in the veins of persons that are elderly like 60+ yrs old.
Good for you. But the dirty little secret is that it is almost impossible for most folks to lose enough weight, so pills are easier.
About all we can do is aim at a modest weight loss, which helps quite a bit.
Patient has to BE RESPONSIBLE
Doctors are/can be a Crutch
It was tough when I fired my DR, I Like him, we go to the same Church he just is amazed about my weight loss... He is the one that started me on this journey when he made me (Ordered me) go get a BP Monitor... (I had really High BP) then I just started watching everything, next I got a Glucose Test kit and that probably saved my Life...
I liked the questions that my Vet asked me about my Dog (not a single question about Symptoms)
So I Fired the Dr that probably saved my Life. (He is a good guy)
PS We are still friends and I am still clumsy enough and active enough that I still request/require his skills and he still accepts cash ;^) I just don’t have a File or a schedule.
That sounds nuts IMO.
In fact, if you read about LOW cholesterol levels, it’s thought to be a contributor to dementia. The brain needs cholesterol.
