This latest flyover video from the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft, provides a stunning view of one of Mars' most eye-popping craters.
This movie was created using an imagery from Mars Express' High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC).
The images are normally taken looking straight down (nadir), and the video combines topography information from the stereo channels of HRSC to generate a three-dimensional landscape, which was then recorded from different perspectives, as with a movie camera, to render the flight shown in the video.
Korolev Crater is 82 kilometers (50 miles) across and at least 2 km (1.25 miles) deep. This well-preserved crater is located the northern lowlands of Mars, just south of a large patch of dune-filled terrain that encircles part of the planet's northern polar cap (known as Olympia Undae).

Amazing.
...Vast, Ice-Filled Crater...
They took images of my ex’s heart?
LOL!!!
I’m tired of pretending like I’m not special. I’m tired of pretending like I’m not bitchin’, a total freakin’ rock star from Mars.
Beautiful!
Fascinating imagery of an alien world, thanks for posting.
Surely there are sights on Mars that will wow people like the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and other places on earth. It is man’s nature to wonder and explore. Yet whenever people are interviewed who claim that they desire to go to Mars, the Moon or some distant, desolate, lifeless place is so great and compelling that they have little or no regard for their safety or returning to earth, some serious pathology usually exists just below the surface. Thinking of people like Elon Musk. Talented, some real accomplishments but a very strange, unhappy guy.
Hockey anyone?
Am I the only one who misread this as “ice cream filled”?
“...some serious pathology usually exists just below the surface.”
That would be the serious pathology that spread people (any people) across this continent, or into Oceana or the Pacific Islands. It is the “indomitable spirit” of Man, or perhaps just, “there’s too many people around here”.
I am in awe of the young Polonesian bucks who would load a few of their friends, their wives and little pigs into a few dugouts and strike out into the Pacific, following a bird they were sure they saw.
Haha
*ping*

However, when life here sucks so bad then venturing out on a one-way trip to a frigid, anaerobic rock only has upside. Think of it as a slow-motion suicide.
Mars is just a Dirty Snowball
Thank you! You find the coolest stuff!
