Explanation: In infrared, Jupiter lights up the night. Recently, astronomers at the Gemini North Observatory in Hawaii, USA, created some of the best infrared photos of Jupiter ever taken from Earths surface, pictured. Gemini was able to produce such a clear image using a technique called lucky imaging, by taking many images and combining only the clearest ones that, by chance, were taken when Earth's atmosphere was the most calm. Jupiters jack-o-lantern-like appearance is caused by the planets different layers of clouds. Infrared light can pass through clouds better than visible light, allowing us to see deeper, hotter layers of Jupiter's atmosphere, while the thickest clouds appear dark. These pictures, together with ones from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Juno spacecraft, can tell us a lot about weather patterns on Jupiter, like where its massive, planet-sized storms form.

One of my favorites from the recent past that I had not posted. Photo is at link.
Very cool.
Much better than sci-fi movies!!
If Jupiter was slightly more massive it would be a brown dwarf star.
Generally, atmospheric temperatures on Jupiter are around 1,700 degrees F (around 930 degrees C), with the exception of areas above the planets poles, which are heated by auroras. Above the Great Red Spot, however, the atmosphere is about 2,420 degrees F (about 1,330 degrees C), ODonoghue said.

BkMrk for later
One would hypothesize that, being MUCH more distant from the Sun than Earth, Jupiter’s effective temperature would be cooler not hotter. I wonder what the temperature is at night!??
Those Jupiterians and their big SUV’s REALLY screwed up their planet with global warming
(I guess)
/sarc off
Jupiter radiates more energy than it receives from the Sun.
1. Like the Earth, it has a core containing radioactive elements whose decay releases heat.
2. Also, it hasn't finished contracting, and that heat of contraction likewise releases tremendous quantities of energy.
Regards,
It would need 13 to 15 times more mass. At that point it would briefly experience deuterium or lithium burning.

the question now is... Is Jupiter Heating Up or Cooling Down?
Jupiter’s temperatures in the clouds is very cold. Those temperatures are for the near vacuum conditions very high up. Something similar is seen in the Sun’s Corona where the temperatures reach millions of degrees. I suspect particles keep on getting energy kicks from the surrounding electric fields. They keep on getting faster and faster from the surrounding electric fields but since it’s high vacuum it’s rare to bump into another particle. Equilibrium is only reached at really high speeds where collisions can happen often enough to equal the constant supply of electrical energy.
And yet there are still astronomers who *insist* that there is no God.
Yes. Jupiter is a cooled down sun.
The original Roomba of our Solar System
Its probably saved the Earth an unbelievable number of times,
