Farmer Finds Roman Treasure Trove Scattered Across Field [Poland]

A farmer has discovered one of the largest hauls of Roman coins to ever be found in Poland.

Mariusz Dyl had been looking for abandoned antlers in a field near Cichobórz, south of Hrubieszów, Lublin, when he stumbled upon the 2,000-year-old coins scattered across 100 metres of the field.

After calling in experts, the 1,753 coins weighing 5.5kg and which were found in 2019, were taken to the Hrubieszów Museum where they have now been analysed and their authenticity confirmed.

Director of the Museum Bartlomiej Bartecki said... all the coins, had been originally placed in a wooden box or leather pouch. While the remains of the container have not survived, it is known that it was decorated with silver-plated bronze rivets.

The oldest denarii bear the image of the Roman emperor Nerva, and the latest - Septimius Severus. “We can therefore conclude that the coins were minted over a period of about 100 years, from the end of the 1st to the end of the 2nd century AD,” says Bartecki.

In the 2nd century AD, the region of present-day Lublin was inhabited by the Vandals. They were driven out by the Goths...

SunkenCiv -- Among the discovered coins I heard has a portrait of a hitherto unknown Roman Emperor, Triumphius Maximus... Another coin -- in remarkable condition -- was found of his wife.  This coin suggests that stiletto high heels were fashionable in the rein of Emperor Triumphius.

Hmm, thanks, I’ll have to check, think I know where it is. For some reason, ‘29 stuck in my head. 35 years ago I was using it to play Quarters, enjoyed the distinctive sound.

Triumphius Maximus Derangement Syndrome was the real reason the Roman Empire collapsed.

On occasion I see a worn nickel from the 1940s and keep it around for a while. When I was a kid silver dimes used to pop up in circulation, and my folks saved silver dollars that passed into their hands as a savings cache to buy stuff our family lacked (we wuz poor).

If I had the wherewithall, I'd probably have a small collection of ancient coins, like any of the pre-Roman medusa head silver coins from around the Mediterranean, or rare oddities, like one of the dozen or so Sejanus coins known to have survived his damnatio memoriae.

Somewhere around here there's a ceramic (? my memory isn't what it used to be) 'piggy' bank that obviously has coins in, and I was told had belonged to the grandmother of mine I never got to meet. I carefully worked the coins out through the slot and was struck by, number one, the wild variety (the one that I recall offhand was some early 19th c king of somewhere in Europe, obviously I don't recall that much) and the complete lack of condition of the coins. Grandma's family had a business, I'm guessing these were oddball coins that came in trade.

Worse yet were the Visigoths, but at least you could see 'em comin'. The Invisigoths were the worst of all.
