Diarrhea = Coronavirus???

You might want to practice VERY CAREFUL self-quarantine if you've got diarrhea, if I'm right in the way I'm connecting news stories. (You might say that's a "big if," but from predicting the 2010 landslide to the election of Pope Francis to the peaking of China's and then South Korea's coronavirus, I think my track record on FR is pretty good. On the other hand, if some sizeable portion of the coronavirus tests being used are serological, I'm prepared to say "oooooops.")

See, a study from the American Journal of Gastroenterology found that of 200 studied patients in Hubei, 50% of them experienced gastro-intestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea, nausea, stomach aches or vomiting. Basically, your "stomach bug." Six (3%) never developed any other symptoms. These were among people HOSPITALIZED for sickness. How often do you go to the HOSPITAL for a stomach bug?

The Journal of the AMA had similar findings. And coronavirus has been found in feces (poop). Dr. Susan Klein, spokesperson for the Infectious Diseases Society of America flat-out called for tracking diarrhea as a way of limiting the coronavirus.

So several days ago, I went to my doctor with a bout of diarrhea because it wasn't getting better, despite my refusal to watch CNN. Having read these, I asked my doctor if I should be careful because diarrhea is occasionally a first symptom of coronavirus. "No, from what you tell me, it sounds like your typical bacterial diarrhea," she assured me. And then gave me medicine for coronavirus.

(Continued in comments... what's this about bo threads longer than 300 words???)

Oh, I'm pretty sure she didn't realize she was. After all, this was before Pres. Trump started talking about hydroxychloroquines (I'll call them HCQ). She gave me what she assured me was the absolute go-to drug for bacterial diarrhea infections, Ciprofloxacin (Cipro). Apparently just about everyone in America who receives antibiotics for diarrhea gets Cipro, or a similar drug. But here's the kicker: Cipro is a brand name for an HCQ... or, almost. It's a flouroquinolone, but that's just about the same thing.

Back to China, for a second...

One Chinese study a while back found that diarrhea was often the ONLY symptom of coronavirus. (And keep in mind that coronavirus is so often symptom-free that it is almost never identified in children and teenagers.) However, the study was largely dismissed because other studies found that people who tested positive for coronavirus rarely had diarrhea (for instance, those studies that found only 3%).

But what if treatment for diarrhea caused "false negatives?" This isn't a hypothetical question. You know that study that found that a Dr. Zalenko found that 300 out of 300 people treated with HCQ saw 100% declines in viral load in six days? Well, you could look at it this way: he found that a common diarrhea treatment causes false negatives in 100% of cases within 6 days. (Unless those tests are serological, in which case, please deploy that big "ooooooops" I mentioned earlier.)

So, if you've had diarrhea, and you've taken all your cipro, you're fine I guess. But if you've got a touch of diarrhea, you haven't been on cipro long, and you haven't been tested for coronavirus, consider using EXTREME caution to prevent spreading coronavirus. Look, I hate people who pronounce Uranus, "oo-RAHN-iss," so I'm just going to say this: if you've had diarrhea, DON'T FART AROUND OLD PEOPLE. Don't even fart in rooms they're likely to go in. THAT FART AEROSOL CAN KILL PEOPLE DAYS LATER. Just don't do it.

Good news for me. Totally constipated. I think it’s from not eating any fast food for 2 weeks.

Since I believe this is going to be a thread focused on symptoms, I’d like to let folks know about a symptom of
COVID-19, they might not have heard about yet.

The senses of taste and smell can be a telltale sign of
contracted COVID-19.

I have RN family members, who noted that those two symptoms
are being added to their list of things to watch for.

If you don’t trust your family doctor, you can always contact your local auto mechanic or plumber..They’re probably more expensive than your doctor and it’s unlikely your insurance will cover their claims.

I should have mentioned, the loss of those senses would be the
telltale sign.

Maybe I’m wrong, but fluoroquinolone is NOT hydroxychloroquine, or really even close.

Ciprofloxacin and hydroxychloroquine are 2 completely different drugs with completely different chemical structures.

Yes, diarrhea may be a symptom of the Wuhan virus, but an uncommon one.

My friend who tested positive and has since recovered, told me he was really nauseous one night about 3-4 days in. He didn’t throw up but thought he was going to. He also lost his sense of taste but only for one day. He mostly had fever, headache and a sore throat.

So you mean to tell me it wasn’t irritable bowel syndrome that I suffered with twenty years ago, but instead it was the Wuhan Flu? I wonder if Imodium AD and Pepto Bismal will include the use of their medicines to treat COVID-19 on their labels now!

Ciprofloxacin is a “go to” drug for just about any kind of infection. My doctor prescribed it to me a couple of years ago when I got a bladder infection and other antibiotics weren’t quite getting it done.

I have a coworker that announced to the world that his wife was being tested because she had diarrhea.

it turns out she’s ok, but she’s mortified because her husband told hundreds of strangers that she had the runs. the next company picnic ought to be fun.
