Hand-washing or hand sanitizer: What’s More Effective Against Coronavirus?

Coronavirus panic has anxious New Yorkers swarming drugstores and supermarkets for germ-killers. And with public-health specialists stressing the importance of keeping your hands clean during a viral outbreak, hand soaps and sanitizers are flying off the shelves.

SNIP

“From what we know about this coronavirus, it’s similar to [previous epidemics of] SARS [severe acute respiratory syndrome] and MERS [Middle East respiratory syndrome], so it should not be that difficult of a microorganism to kill,” Dr. Nahid Bhadelia, medical director of the special pathogens unit at Boston Medical Center, tells The Post. “Soap and water, and alcohol-based hand sanitizers, can kill it.”

As for what’s most effective, she and other experts agree that washing your hands is generally the better choice: It’s more effective at removing stubborn grime — which bugs can cling to, and potentially feed on — and at killing certain pathogens. Lathering up will also help you ward off more than coronavirus. “It’s going to protect you from other infectious diseases, too, like the flu and diarrheal diseases,” Bhadelia says.

“No, that’s not been definitievely proven. So, please don’t represent it as a fact. “

Perhaps not to your standards, but there’s enough out there for me to believe it.

"Speaking of anti-contamination strategies, I had to laugh about NYC and its anti-plastic bags law soon to go into effect...reusable bags (cloth or paper) are virtual microbial hothouses. "

You've hit a soft spot. I need therapy as I loved those plastic bags.

Of all the stupid laws NY has come up with, this one is insane and a hoax. A scam. It's 5 cents for a paper bag. Three cents goes to NYS, the other two cents goes to the local community NOT the store owner! Insane or what?!! Then, the newspeople tell us where to keep the germ filled reusable bags so we don't forget them when we go to the store.

Before sliding into deep depression, I solved my problem by buying a box of the so called "single use" bags. Hope I won't get arrested.

There is a recipe for hand sanitizer which uses Everclear. You mix it with a bit of aloe Vera gel or vegetable glycerin for moisturizer.
You can add essential oils like peppermint and tea tree if you like.
I use a lot of hydrogen peroxide also, with a few drops of clove oil added. Just spray that on surfaces and hands.

hand washing is better but since most people don’t have access to soap and water in many situations hand alcohol sanitizer is the best option because it will actually be used...

I wash the faucet handles when I wash my hands in a public restroom. No telling what was on the previous users hands.

Other than that, the most important step is to shut off the water with a paper towel.

Actually the most important step, after the hand washing, is opening the stall and bathroom doors using a towel or your sleave, if nothing else (then washing the item at home).

File this one under “Paying Attention in Class”

While I lived in West Texas, I kept a steady supply of Clorox sanitizing wipes for small jobs around the kitchen. When I moved to Michigan in 2017, I carried 2 containers with me. I still have one left but on its last-legs.

Checked the label yesterday and, right there, near the end of the list, was “Human Coronavirus”. Did the Clorox people foretell the future? Or, maybe they learned something from the 2002 Coronavirus outbreak?

This is a simple flu strain that will not devastate a healthy population. Stay clean my friends.

Purell is 140 proof grain alcohol (ethanol).

"Purell is 140 proof grain alcohol (ethanol)."

You're right. I just double checked. I guess I was thinking of rubbing alcohol. However, it does have isopropyl alcohol as an inactive ingredient. Thanks. Anyway, it's a good secondary cleanser if you can't wash your hands all the time. Plus, the Advance formula has aloe vera so it doesn't dry out your hands as much.

It can be researched but there are several police reports available where the DUI stop was found to be intoxicated from ingesting Purell.
Alkies will find a way.

Well, true. I just assumed everyone knows not to grab the door handle, but I know not everyone thinks about not touching that dirty faucet handle after washing their hands. ;)

A friend of mine was (before she retired) the VP of a hospital in FL. She helped institute the policy of having foam sanitizer dispensers on the wall by the light switch in all rooms. She told me they cut hospital caused infections by 30%.

Before the days of hand sanitizers, when I was vendor to gift shops & had to handle a lot of stuff touched by germie kids, I carried a roll of paper towels and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol in the car and used after each stop. I cut my winter colds by 50%.

Meh. I rarely wash my hands, and when I do it’s usually just hot water. The only time I definitely do it is after working with grease/engine grime, or when I’ve touched a bunch of raw chicken/pork while cooking.

Forgot to add, a couple weeks ago was the first time I’ve actually been sick (strep) for a good three-plus years, so it’s working for me
