Hand-washing or hand sanitizer: What’s More Effective Against Coronavirus?

Coronavirus panic has anxious New Yorkers swarming drugstores and supermarkets for germ-killers. And with public-health specialists stressing the importance of keeping your hands clean during a viral outbreak, hand soaps and sanitizers are flying off the shelves.

SNIP

“From what we know about this coronavirus, it’s similar to [previous epidemics of] SARS [severe acute respiratory syndrome] and MERS [Middle East respiratory syndrome], so it should not be that difficult of a microorganism to kill,” Dr. Nahid Bhadelia, medical director of the special pathogens unit at Boston Medical Center, tells The Post. “Soap and water, and alcohol-based hand sanitizers, can kill it.”

As for what’s most effective, she and other experts agree that washing your hands is generally the better choice: It’s more effective at removing stubborn grime — which bugs can cling to, and potentially feed on — and at killing certain pathogens. Lathering up will also help you ward off more than coronavirus. “It’s going to protect you from other infectious diseases, too, like the flu and diarrheal diseases,” Bhadelia says.

"Remember that it doesn’t decrease a germ load instantly, though. It takes a few minutes."

I'm not sure you're correct about the time frame. Isopropyl alcohol in Purell and other hand sanitizers work immediately. Why do you think medical people rub your arm or butt with isopropyl and almost immediately give you an injection? THE only reason they hesitate or wipe the area with a swab is because if the alcohol is still on your flesh and hasn't evaporated completely when the needle penetrates - just damn ouch!

My ex-wife is a LVN. She has told me the same thing.

Too true. I remember when the paper bag was demonized and we switched to plastic...no matter what you do, you can’t keep these eco-freaks happy.

Regular soap is fine. Just remember to lather for at least two verses of Old MacDonald’s.

For now, I do what I would normally do. I’m already a fanatic nut because of RA / low immunity. I wash everything from the grocery store that can be washed.

Being alert and very careful. Wash my hands more than any doctor/nurse. Wipe handles or wear rubber gloves and dispose after each use.

Take even more precautions.

If it’s your time, it’s your time.

It is easier for us, and faster and less expensive man hours for a new hire to gather and bag our orders versus a 15 year checker pushing our purchases thru the scanners.

Also, it eliminates someone stocking your buddies goods instead of what is ordered.

Our Walmart had a new manager, and I discussed with her how certain items were all ways out of stock and competitive brands were on hand. Yet those out of stock products were available at competitors.

She started looking at what was ordered and out of stock and realized that something was wrong.

Since, then most of the outs have been taken care of with the new manager.

Since it’s aerosol-transmitted, probably none of the above.

I agree. I think it's a good idea to do the best you can, but also to refuse to fall into hysteria. Worry is hell on one's immune system :-)

I personally recommend amputation of both hands. And you know what — this is as absurd of an opinion as the junk that is every moment being reported

um.. just avoid being extremely old and being in extremely poor health to begin with, and you will be safe from this relatively benign flu variant.

Here is one to think about. Your cell phone is about as germ laden as you can imagine and it’s pretty near your face much of the time.

I have a couple of cell cases that are pretty good for protecting the phone and also easy to take off & put on. $10 each. Every couple of days I change the case and wash it in hot soapy water.

Since it’s aerosol-transmitted,

No, that's not been definitievely proven. So, please don't represent it as a fact.

How do you suggest that we avoid being ‘old’ or in ‘bad health’ ?

(Or do you think that folks answering to those descriptions are not valuable?)

If you’re not in a place to wash your hands, such as your car, then hand sanitizer may be your only option. For instance if you use the ATM then go to McDonalds and want to eat your French Fries, use hand sanitizer.

If you are very old and in poor health, you should already be taking precautions as you always do during flu season. If your not one of those, then you have nothing to worry about.
