Ford Fiesta, Focus transmission lawsuit reaches multimillion dollar settlement

Ford Focus and Fiesta owners have had many days in court, but finally, it appears a long-running class-action lawsuit will wrap up.

According to court documents filed this past Friday, first spotted by the Detroit Free Press, the Blue Oval has agreed to settle a lawsuit surrounding an allegedly faulty transmission found in the 2011-2016 Fiesta and 2012-2016 Focus. The dual-clutch transmission, named DPS6, has for years been the focal point of consumer complaints.

The lawsuit, filed in 2012, alleged that Ford lied about the problems in the cars and continued to sell them to buyers, allegedly blaming them for the transmission issue. Last July, Ford documents showed the company indeed knew of the DPS6 transmission's defects, but continued selling the Focus and Fiesta with the component.

Payday for owners will include a $30 million guarantee from Ford. The sum is in addition to an ongoing buyback program, on which Ford has spent nearly $47.5 million so far. Reimbursement from the $30 million fund will go to owners who've received multiple failed transmission repairs within five years or 60,000 miles of owning their Focus or Fiesta. Specifically, owners who've scheduled three or more service visits for transmission hardware issues or owners with three or more software updates will be eligible for cash payments.

Ford knew about it but let it slide? Bad optics.

“Ford knew about it but let it slide? Bad optics.”

I’m more concerned that anyone buys this UAW-built crap...but then again, maybe it’s mostly government entities.

Their CVT transmission is terrible, too. Son in law went through 3 in less than 100K miles and is going after them under lemon law.

Not the first company who’s done it, and they won’t be the last.

I wonder if I am the only one who thinks auto transmissions are incredibly complex.

My older Brother had a 49 Chrysler with an auto transmission. It worked fine.

I remember the “reverse clutch piston” in the Taurus transmissions back in the late 80’s and 90’s. Blew up a lot of transmissions back then too.

Bought one used for my daughter before I knew about the transmission. Despite the slight shudder at some speeds, it’s a fairly decent car.

Sounds more like Boeing than Ford.

The tranny in the Ford Fiesta and Focus isn’t an automatic transmission. It’s actually a computer shifted manual. I think the problem is that the computer can’t shift the transmission the way a computer can and you get shudder.

Correction: The tranny in the Ford Fiesta and Focus isn’t an automatic transmission. It’s actually a computer shifted manual. I think the problem is that the computer can’t shift the transmission the way a HUMAN can and you get shudder as the clutch release is not quite right.

I have driven a manual transmission my entire life!! Every time I purchase a car I have to special order it sales people look at me as if I were from another planet!! After having driven a manual for that many years if I rent a car that is automatic my left foot keeps wanting to push in the clutch and right hand keeps going to look for the stick!! I love the manual transmission!!

...

They are and some of them have eight speeds now.

But some transmissions work great. Ford, OTOH, knows how to make a really terrible transmission.

So it’s an automatic manual transmission.

Correct. No torque converter and hydraulic fluid isn’t used to hold the plates together.

A friend has one of these. The trans has been fixed and or replaced several times. He has less than 40k on it. Ford paid for the service, but never gave a loaner, forcing him to pay for towing, Uber, having to share rides, etc.
Ford’s Research and Development team is the American public.

The shudder is bothersome, but I do not think it’s harmful. And my daughter’s car doesn’t shudder very much at all.

I learned on a manual and that is all i ever drove until Daddy got a 65 Rambler with a 287 V-8 with a Borg Warner auto.

I beat every 289 and 283 in town even beat a 348 and my best friend’s 63 352. Would have beaten a 352 with a 4 barrel but what I thought was around a quarter turned out to be closer to a half and he finally passed me.

Why do we have to have so many threads about trannies.
