I wonder if I am the only one who thinks auto transmissions are incredibly complex.

My older Brother had a 49 Chrysler with an auto transmission. It worked fine.

The tranny in the Ford Fiesta and Focus isn’t an automatic transmission. It’s actually a computer shifted manual. I think the problem is that the computer can’t shift the transmission the way a computer can and you get shudder.

I have driven a manual transmission my entire life!! Every time I purchase a car I have to special order it sales people look at me as if I were from another planet!! After having driven a manual for that many years if I rent a car that is automatic my left foot keeps wanting to push in the clutch and right hand keeps going to look for the stick!! I love the manual transmission!!

They are and some of them have eight speeds now.

But some transmissions work great. Ford, OTOH, knows how to make a really terrible transmission.

That was probably the four speed Prestomatic. I am partial to the three speed Torqueflite, myself.

Transmissions got gimpier when CAFE standards forced the manufacturers to do ANYthing to shave off a mile or two. For that reason, we won't see the well-regarded Chevy 2 speed back again.
