Eli Manning bid farewell to the Giants and the NFL on Friday, officially announcing his retirement after bringing two Super Bowl titles to Big Blue over 16 seasons as their quarterback.

Giants co-owner John Mara also announced that the Giants will induct Manning into their Ring of Honor next season and “no one ever will wear No. 10 again.”

I've been a Giants fan since the 1950s and was thrilled when the Giants traded for him. However, I have to admit he was probably more a disappointment than a success.
But you have to admit he was a class act.

The notion that Eli Manning is even being considered as a Hall of Fame nominee by some is more a statement on the dominance of the New England Patriots over the last 20 years than it is on Manning’s ability as a quarterback.

If he had two Super Bowl wins over any other team or combination of teams, he is probably seen accurately as a mediocre to a mediocre-okay quarterback.

Just my opinion.

One player can’t do it all...Dynasties occur because of unusually gifted TEAMS...Packers, Baltimore Colts, and yes, New England... A QB is an integral part, but it takes a lot more...

It used to drive me crazy watching the team I followed play against Fran Tarkenton...that guy was as elusive as the day is long.

I remember watching a play with defenders chasing Tarkenton where he must have ran twitching and juking 30 yards in the opposite direction, then turned and ran and juked nearly the same distance back with defenders grabbing at him and grasping at him the entire time missing him by inches or getting a sleeve or an arm, before he wound up and threw the ball about fifty yards for a touchdown.

LOL, I likely threw my beer on the floor...THAT guy deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

He was a very odd QB in some respects. Mediocre to slightly better than average under normal circumstances, very good when he had downfield weapons on offense and a good offensive line to protect him, and downright awful in recent years when the team had a awful line.

But one of the best of all time in a tight spot late in a game when engineering a comeback win, for sure.

He finished his career with a win-loss percentage of exactly .500 ... which probably sums everything up perfectly.

It's also a statement about how ludicrous the passing statistics have become in the last 10-15 years.

It used to be that a QB who passed for 3,000 yards had a great season. Now, an average starting QB will throw for 3,500 yards in a BAD season.

Eli Manning is my favorite NFL quarterback of all time. A class act, both on and off the gridiron.

He basically picked his own successor, and then hung around for an extra season to help with the transition and serve as a backup.

There aren't too many pro athletes with that kind of status and leverage in any organization.
