In a theme park parking lot at night, a worker sleeps in her car.

You’re not supposed to see them like this, their polyester prince costumes unbuttoned and backpacks hanging from the shoulders of their colonial period dresses.

Flip flops on, lunch boxes in hand, legions of workers stream into an employee parking lot at Walt Disney World, weary from another shift of making magic at the world’s busiest theme park.

This is the place where the pixie dust loses its sparkle.

It’s where the low-wage workers who power Orlando’s tourism machine leave the attractions, hotels and eateries and fade into a community that doesn’t have enough affordable housing, public transportation or opportunities in industries with higher-paying jobs.

A year after a landmark decision by Disney to raise its minimum wage for about 40,000 union workers to $15 an hour by 2021, many of those employees are better off. By October, the number of unionized workers earning more than $15 an hour had more than quadrupled to 13,057 compared to August 2018, according to the Service Trades Council Union.

But people earning near the $15 mark, long considered the gold standard for a living wage, still find their paychecks barely cover the basics — so they move farther from the attractions to find lower rent and make difficult decisions each month about whether they can pay overdue medical bills or buy enough groceries to feed a family.

They’re people like Gabby Alcantara-Anderson.

Its never enough. With all the women reporters doing emotion driven feature stories, i am so tired of this crap.

This is still a place you can make decisions and changes to give yourself a better life. Maybe put all the energy of b1tching and whining into actually improving your life in quantifiable ways, these people could actually make some real positive changes for themselves.

The woman in the picture in the article doesn’t look like she’s going out to starve anytime soon.

America has the richest poor in the world.

If we’re so bad why does everyone want to come here?

The same libtard socialists writing this crap are the same that demand mexicans be let in en masse ‘for a better life’.

Socialist frigtards.

Exactly! That is how they do it.
I worked for Tokyo Disneyland, also. Ended up staying in Japan for another 10 years doing non-Disney work.

And they pick a woman employee to try to really, tug on your emotions.

Women are never told to reign in spending/decrease their liabilities or improve their skills. Men have had to live within their means for years because there’s less than zero sympathy from any area of society for a guy who’s having a hard time. They tell him to get more skills to get a better job, and cut unnecessary expenses. Since women buy so much worthless and useless crap and are impulsive, emotional spenders, buying stuff because they feel bad, or up, or are revenge buying because someone else got something and they deserve something too, and all the businesses all gear advertising towards the impulse buyers, yeah, I see how a woman who makes $15/hr is living in her car at disney.

Keep complaining and Disney will replace you with a robot like they have already done with the kids on It's a Small World and all the presidents in the Hall of Presidents.

Disney calls their employees “cast members” so that they can argue that they are entertainers and not just a cook , a plumber , a bus driver , a ticket seller ... so that they can treat them with less employment restrictions under the exceptions carved out for the movie and stage industry.

I worked at WDW in the late 70’s ... sucked then , sucks more now.

but at some point they could hire someone younger to do her job for less.
*******
they bring in armies of college kids as “interns” , put them in Disney owned condo’s to recapture the salary paid and use them to keep wages down for the other employees.

After seeing your first post, I was thinking how you never fail to bring your woman-hating into any thread.

Talk about griping and moaning!

'As for groceries, angel hair pasta and chicken thighs...a whole meal for about 2.50 a person.'

I could spend all day lording over a slow cooker of sauerbraten or hickory smoking a whole chicken on the grill, but my wife would take a honey-baked thigh and a blob of angel hair over anything else I could deliver. She blames everything down to her taste buds for being affected by MS, but say no, it's simple tastes for simple minds. (After 21 years, yeah, I go there.😈)

“...whether they can pay overdue medical bills or buy enough groceries to feed a family.”

Newspapers recycle this old story every year: false alternatives. Either pay rent or pay electric bill. Either pay medical bills or pay for groceries. Either pay the gas bill or pay the grocery bill. Ho hum.

Disney abuses both workers and customers and just like Amazon, Starbucks and Ivy League colleges.
Solution? Do what early Americans did: study, pray and work at a trade.

Well, first I read up a little on MS and then said a few prayers for your wife and hope that is doing OK.

It seems like the symptoms and their effects vary quite a bit from person to person.

Boy at 51 a person shouldn’t have to look that up.

That being said, I’m a simple guy with a simple mind so a BLOB of sticky, gooey, JUST UNDERCOOKED angel hair with a honey thigh sounds like SUNDAY AT MY HOUSE!

I like your wife :)

Well, since we’re WOPs we have sausage also :)

My good friend can’t smell and as a result says she doesn’t taste much as a result of a sinus tumor 30 years ago that somehow resulted in the smell part of the brain being damaged.

I guess smell and taste are somehow quite connected.

Boy did i ramble!!

She has recurring/remitting MS, which is the least aggressive, but that's like saying you have a choice of a firing squad, Ol' Sparky, or slow poison. All three are going to get you, one just not quite as fast as the others. I can tell when she flares up and levels off. Plus she changed jobs, and now that we have a new medical carrier, she's having one hell of a time getting her MS meds reauthorized. That shit costs thousands of dollars a month out of pocket and are a specialty medication, so there are a lot of hoops that have to be jumped through, our doctor keeps reauthorizing it, but they want her to get more damned bloodwork done and possibly another MRI with another neurologist before they pass it on to the insurance company, who will get in a pissing contest with the pharmaceutical company over who co-pays what. This has been an endless slog for years, and she hasn't been able to stay on her meds consistently. They have to monitor the holes in her cheese annually to watch the progression, and if they decide to fail her over to a new med, the whole circus starts over again with the insurance and drug companies. She just stays on what she's taking until that boxing match is over. Me? My main ailments (diabetes, hypertension, a few others) are by-and-large controlled by lots of generic meds at this point (with the exception of my shots and a new sugar pill added to my morning cocktail), so I can get away with $4 per month refills at the pharmacy. She used to take Tramadol for her bad knees (she had a dual-knee op a dozen years ago because the joints are totally shot), but our doc stopped it and said he'd send her to a pain management specialist. Ever since these Dr. Feelgood types were busted selling scripts for hydrocodone out of their kitchen doors at home down here, all the other reputable docs have been gunshy about prescribing any Class III CDS to their patients, unless it's a special case. I'm prone to falling because of diabetic neuropathy and infection damamge in my lower legs, and took a header off the porch last December (the 8th, I remember the night), and was laid up in bed for weeks. All the doc would do is give me muscle relaxants, since all it was was cracked bones and stoved muscles, and nothing requiring surgery. How is Valium gonna help? I'm already on lorazepam as needed. Same thing. I don't need an anxiety med, I need a Percocet!!!

There's very little that she eats anymore that she said doesn't have a metallic taste to it. Except Ranch dressing and butter. If I made angel hair, the first thing out of her mouth would be, 'Needs butter.' She's an unrepentant butterholic. LOL I think part of her tastebud complaints are pure puffery, to make me cook what she wants. She helps me make everything-but-the-sink spaghetti sauce, mild Tex-Mex chili, Three-Beast meatloaf, stuffed cabbage rolls, and dives into it when it's done. And you can be by God sure that if I handed her a tub of Philly brand cheesecake filling, she'd eat the whole thing with her fingers. LOL!!!

Companies always seem to find a way to practice de facto age discrimination, or at least slough off those who have accrued that extra week od vacation, etc.; Americans are learning some hard lessons about work. Younger people already offered crap compensation are just learning earlier than most of us did years ago. It is no wonder that so many people flock to any form of government job now.

Hard for these bleeding hearts to accept the fact that people have choices in life and bad choices bring about bad results. This is one person and their poster child for all that is wrong with us, America corporate America and the poor
