We are two-thirds along the way to a new American Civil warat least, thats what almost 70 percent of voters questioned by Georgetown Universitys Institute of Politics and Public Service poll believe.
When asked to express on a scale from 0 to 100, how far we are on our way to the brink of a civil war, the mean response was 67.23.
This conclusion features in the second Civility Poll by GU Politics this year released on Wednesday. The Battleground Civility Poll is the second component of the bipartisan Battleground Poll.
The survey found a generally held belief in over 70 percent of those polled from all across the electorial spectrum, including Democrats, non-partisans, Republicans, Hispanics, blacks, rural voters, urban voters, young and old that the divisions in class, race, and political creed are becoming more significant.
A generally found tenure is that the overall civility in politics is on a free fall in recent times (88% agree, including 71% strongly agree), and the discrepancy between Democrats and Republicans seems to be beyond reconciliation.

That would require a lot of cooperation from the members of that state's Guard, wouldn't it?
Good points.
One scenario is that following a Trump victory in 2020 blue states would secede. Trump would likely try to quell the insurrection. Could go the other way with a Little White Dove Warren victory as well.
Wasn’t the Guard sent to Korea first? (history lessons). Did all the states agree at that time? People say that in America the military wouldn’t fire on its own citizens - that was up until Kent State.
If the Progs overturn the election of our President I think that would be the shot heard round the world for this century!
We are already in a second civil war. Its here.
This is a true statement. However there are complexities that mask what this actually means in this country at this time. The violent thugs on the left are concentrated in large cities mostly near the coasts but also places like Detroit, Chicago, and Atlanta. The thugs are not as idealistic as they are portrayed by the media. Mostly they are criminals looking for any opportunity to loot and victimize whoever and whatever they can for short term gain.
The interior areas in the country minus the big cities will not put up with this nonsense. So if you are really worried about civil war you should move out of the blue enclaves, pull up a chair and watch the thugs burn down the places they call home from a distance. Big cities are in for trouble because the liberal snow flakes have no idea how to deal with the violent thug that are supposedly on their side idealogically. Snow flake groups are too busy competing for the top spot in the victimhood parade to be much of a threat in a "civil war". The biggest threat that they will present is large numbers of hungry, sad "victims" streaming into rural areas and demanding that they be taken care of.
“1/3 or more believe Trump is a fascist criminal illegally in office who needs to be removed at all costs.
1/3 or more believe the Democrats are the party of corrupt socialist oligarchies trying to take away all their freedoms and make tax slaves out of them and their children forever.
!/3 are completely oblivious living their lives who will go which ever way the power structure in their area goes.”
Excellent summation.
You’re confusing standard Title 10 activation of the Guard/Reserve over their usual Title 32 authorities/duties versus the FedGov telling those same Guard troops to strongarm their own fellow state citizens. Some will obey; most won’t.
Not sure why you think these guys are robots who only follow orders and that nothing else can factor into decisions.
Uh....NO they are NOT!
Especially when you consider the percentage among law enforcement and the military who are on America's side.
Where have you been? ANTIFA!!!!
Yes. I’ve read about them. Divide them into the US and tell me how that works out? It’ll be groups fighting groups or people defending themselves locally against them; this antifa bunch won’t be driving around in armored cars.
What was that expression back in the 60's, "What if we gave a war and nobody came"?
It wont be a new civil war
Itll be the first
The last was a war of separating
Civil wars are for the whole kibosh
The governor is the commander of the state's national guard. They can be nationalized through the governor. The guard is local people who have supported local politicians, many of them believing that Washington D.C. is out of control. If you have a flash point incident where the state government is under assault by the Federal govt. who are the leaders of that state's guard going to stand by, the governor and their state, or Washington D.C.?
We are not at the temperature where that flash could occur yet, but the stew is getting hotter by the day. Consider how much the temperature has gone up between the 2016 election and today.
Not sure if thats completely accurate or if you just need to clarify your wording. My understanding is that NG has two chains of command, but never both at the same time. They generally fall under the states governor, but if Federalized, they then fall under DoD.
It's not 1860 or even 1960. State governments and the federal government are more or less on the same page. If we haven't already seen a civil war over sanctuary cities or abortion, we aren't likely to see one in the future.
If states like Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi form a coalition, they will have military power, economic strength, a strangle hold on the energy supply, and control of major ports including Houston, Mobile and the Mississippi River.
Forty percent of the voters in those states vote Democrat. Add to them the people who don't want conflict and your scenario is unlikely.
Red state or Blue state, most people really don't like people who are really into ideology, politics, and political conflict.

If there is a flash point incident, are they going to follow the orders of the Governor or Washington DC? Under current conditions, I don’t think the stew is hot enough to support a flash point incident. I am merely pointing out the path that would evolve if the temperature were to continue rising and a flash point incident occurred. There is no denying that the temperature is rising. I am just praying that it does not come to a boil in my lifetime.
You ask good questions.
The fallacy of analogies is that they are almost always imprecise and when examined fall apart.
The Civil War was a sectional/cultural war. That is, the residents of one region fighting with the residents of another area.
Civil War II (if it went hot) would be an ideological war - a struggle for supremacy of ideas. Since the “battle lines” would be theoretic not geographical it is harder to envision what would constitute a front.
How would one identify friend from foe? No one would be wearing uniforms (although it is possible or even likely that some participants would find ways to declare their allegiances). Some might say “It’s easy - libs live in cities and conservatives live in rural areas.” There is truth there but also many many exceptions.
What I see as likely are skirmishes between opposing factions. Mostly in urban to suburban settings. There will be an event in Portland and some unsuspecting conservative will be yanked out of their car and pummeled by klantifa types. That guy will respond by pulling his piece and ventilating several thugs. A riot will ensue with klantifa types seeking random victims and more thugs shot by citizens tired of being assaulted. This sparks more skirmishes but no not universal, open war.
Look at our present state. Skirmishes are only occurring when righties “intrude” into (urban) klantifa areas. The closest to an analogy of “roving bands of right-wing thugs” are the Proud Boys - and even that is totally in-apt. There ARE roving bands of violent klantifa types - but only in very leftist, very downtown areas where the majority of residents are similarly left-wing.
Sorry, no CW-II.
