When a diet rises to popularity as fast as the ketogenic diet a very-low-carbohydrate, high-fat, and moderate-protein diet it inevitably gains panacea status. (For reference: See the popular movie The Magic Pill on Netflix, which asserts the keto diet can be a powerful cure for health problems.) While clinicians may be using this diet as an adjunct to therapy for particular diseases, its certainly not the answer for all situations, and keto can be downright harmful for some people.

Number 1 on the "Don't Keto" list is Type 1 Diabetes.
If you are on (or considering) the Keto or low carbs the article is well worth reading.
Personal experiences on the Keto (good or bad) are always welcome.
I have noted a lot of new members to the Keto ping list....welcome to all. Also, my personal thanks to BobL for starting and maintaining the ping list.
Please ping the group.
How is it different from Atkins?
Not sure myself ... I think the difference is that Atkins is “high protein” and keto is generally “medium protein” (and high fat).

Fat causes heart disease scam...
I followed Atkins for a number of years. While off that diet on a strict basis I had a gallstone lodge in pancreas. Doctors tell me I could have died. Had gallbladder removed. I always wondered if the low carb diet may have accelerated production of gallstones.
Also, since having gallbladder and pancreatitis pain I cannot even think of eating high fat foods. I know physically I probably can but my desire to avoid the pain I experienced I get nauseous even thinking about fried foods, bacon, hamburgers etc.
I disagree about Type 1 diabetes. I am Type 1 and currently going back on keto. Was on it for about a year and a half. The article says it’s dangerous to severely limit carbs while taking insulin. Well, duh. My solution was to take less insulin. Carbs are the problem. Fewer carbs=lower glucose=less insulin. The best thing is that since I am not dependent on glucose for my energy, no huge up and down swings.
Yes, I never personally made much of a distinction between “keto” and ‘Atkins’. I always tried for about 50/50 fat/protein.
The fat is the fuel. It gets metabolized into the ketones.
The protein is for tissue maintenance.
It was always my understanding that you didn’t want to let the protein to dominate too much, as your body can actually metabolize protein into blood glucose (someone correct me on this, as I cannot remember specifically the name for this process) and it’s not a particularly efficiient process nor does it spike insulin, so it’s particularly important if you are in keto fore weight loss purposes to make sure you aren’t too high in protein.
Thanks for the link.
Excellent info...thanks for sharing you personal experience.
To be specific in how much my insulin use dropped, I completely eliminated my bolus insulin, which was a sliding scale/meal dependent amount usually 10-20 units a day. Basal insulin decreased by a third. A1C was 5.3
Can you eat good fats like sardines and avocados? Can you eat olive oil?
Not all fats are equal. Good fats are healthy, bad fats are not.
After being overweight all of my life, I stopped eating a low fat diet and started eating healthy fats, good proteins, all the non-strarchy vegetables I could and a moderate amount of starchy vegetable and fruits. I avoid sugar an proceed food.
Over a 5 year period I oat 50 pounds, but I don’t have the continuous feeling of hunger I had for years on a low fat diet. I do have occasional treats but for the most part, they just don’t taste good to me anymore.
I like to call my diet, the JERF diet - Just Eat Real Food
Gluconeogenisis. It’s why keto limits carbs to keep your body from making too much glucose to use and kicking you out if ketosis.
Gallbladder RemovalIf youve had your gallbladder removed, your body no longer has a reservoir for bile, a fluid that aids digestion, particularly fat. If you go keto without boosting bile flow [which your body cant do without a gallbladder], youll feel awful, says Hammond.
Personally, I find this bogus. I had my gallbladder removed around 2006 and have been on Keto since that time. I feel "awful" when I go off a keto diet. Further, the symptom "feel awful" can be because someone eats artichokes. Or shrimp. I always feel awful on the few occassions when, for courtesy reasons, I've eaten shrimp.
*Gluconeogenesis
“Glucogenesis”, performed by the liver, I believe.
I probably could eat them but the desire is gone except for potato chips and popcorn. I even avoid salad dressings. Its psychological from the trauma of being hospitalized for a week due to gallstones and pancreatitis. I get some fats from low fat cheeses and some dairy products but I have to force myself to include those in daily diet.
My experience with keto was that my ability to exercise intensely plummeted.
I could only do relatively low intensity cardio - no sprints, and I fell far from maintaining my previous threshold pace.
I did lose weight effectively, and seemed leaner.
“Nonetheless, large, long-term, randomized controlled trials on obesity and keto are lacking thus far.”
Studies? Perhaps. But a million or so just doing it and being happy with the results? Of course, THAT doesn’t count. Just as the low-fat diet and America’s escalating obesity doesn’t mean the government and AHA are not truly the High Priests of dieting.
“Also, because a typical keto diet food list is so restrictive, you need to speak with your doctor before trying it. If you get the green light, keto beginners can benefit from working with a registered dietitian...”
What fantasy world does this writer live in? First, I haven’t seen an actual DOCTOR in years. I’m doing well if my healthcare has a visit to a PA for a checkup. If I asked to see someone about a diet, they would laugh themselves silly!
Second, the last few PAs I’ve seen needed to lose 75 lbs. Or more. And I’m supposed to ask THEM about diet? Ask someone whose belly forces their thighs apart when sitting about how to diet?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ask the folks who told my wife, “Your total cholesterol is 202. You need to be on statins NOW!” about health? The statins left her in enough pain after 3 weeks that she quit, and 202 is hardly high cholesterol. And total cholesterol for a woman at 60 means....means...well, pretty much nothing.
Sorry. The arrogance of the elite staggers me.
