If you are a competitive racer, you probably need to eat more carbs, you’ll burn them up.
But for those who do sedentary jobs, and only have time for 30-minute workouts a few days a week, Keto does make much more sense.
Given the hundreds of contradictory diets going around I’ve come to the conclusion that when it comes to understanding nutrition and how our bodies process food, we’re barely past the stone age stage.
Since it isn’t well understood, maybe the best thing is to eat a bit of everything if you’re in reasonably good health.
If not, trying a specific diet that claims to help your situation is fine, and if it works stick with it. Otherwise try something else until you find what works best for you.
Our bodies are all different, there is no single magic bullet that works for everybody. I’m especially leery of any diet that focuses on a single nutrient.
Also, I know there are a lot of keto recipes out there, but it’s so easy to just throw a chunk of meat on the grill, steam some veggies in the double boiler or microwave a bag of veggies in their steamer bags...and walk away full. I actually cook almost every night now as opposed to the wife and I going out. It’s a good little routine we have here. (The wife won’t commit to full fledged keto, but she eats what & how I eat, so she gets a lot of the bennies.)
“If you are a competitive racer, you probably need to eat more carbs, youll burn them up.”
I exercise just for fitness, but aim for an athletic level of cardio fitness. I think ketones burn clean as fuel, but don’t support peak output/surges as well.
Sugar/carbohydrate overdose is epidemic in modern society - that is why the average person is so much fatter today than 100 years, or in more primitive/poorer societies.
Both the higher bodyfat, and the chronic blood sugar swings of high carbs/high glycemic loads induce a lot of problems in the body - our epidemics of heart disease, cancer and diabetes are unusual in societies with much lower sugar loads in their diet (but they typically move/exercise more as well).
I think that keto might be best to initially get bodyfat back into a healthy range, or to fight cancer (which is exceptionally dependent on sugar). It seems very effective in getting people (I know some personally) who have long struggled with overweight/obesity, to drop a lot of excess weight (like 50 pounds).
Longer term, a low to moderate carb diet (out of ketosis) might be safer for heart disease, once you have reaped the huge near to mid-term benefits of achieving and maintaining low bodyfat (which are massive). Concentrated sugars are something that should probably always be treated with at least as much caution as alcohol.
Some people advocate periodic ketosis as a form of housekeeping (sort of like periodic fasting, but with longer “on” phases, like one or two months per year), to suppress any developing cancerous cells, and shed seasonal weight gain.
I just don’t see how cutting out starchy carbs and high-glycemic fruits is a bad thing.
This is exactly what I have done/do. Because I started this 13 years ago, I took off the weight I needed to, and have stayed that way. Most of the year I’ll be low carb, do a once maybe twice a year 3 day fast, and then stay in ketosis for 8-10 weeks. My weight is very stable, which it wasn’t before I started all this many years ago. Also, something I started more recently, 3 years ago is intermittent fasting, 16/8.
My sister is doing it, but doesn’t it require you to starve yourself. Just wouldn’t work for me. Call me undisciplined by I just can NOT go hungry.
I am eager to know what my omega-3 index is. I sent off a blood spot test which is pending - it’s important enough to be considered a cardiac risk factor and they say most Americans will not be in the desirable range (8-12%).
So what carbs would you add in? Just eat more of the vegetables you were already eating on Keto? I don't think adding starchy carbs/high-glycemic fruits to a diet is going to accomplish anything good.
“So what carbs would you add in? Just eat more of the vegetables?”
Predominantly. But also some grain, potatoes and such.
I’ll pass on the grains. Maybe an occasional potato with skin.
Its the stupid diet on the planet it destroys your liver
Look if you wanna lose weight not only should you cut calories only eat fruits and vegetables but you need to exercise exercise exercise
Sugar destroys the liver, not fats.
I’m no expert, just erring on the side of moderation.
The nutritional guidelines that recommend a high carb diet, that have made everyone fat and sick, are based on the desire to prevent heart disease. But this is the fundamental scientific error.
Heart disease isn't caused by eating fat or saturated fat. It's caused by things that are aggravated by eating carbohydrates. This is why the recommendations are so wrong-headed and have failed to create a healthier population.
Adding carbs isn't safer for heart disease. Just the opposite.

I read that, personally, I think he is mostly full of shit. Almost all the studies he references are high protein, that’s not keto. I could go on but, meh.
Yeah. From an article that starts off calling the keto diet a fad, containing false information, on a web site from a chiropractor and specialist in Ayurveda.
I'm talking about actual science.
Thanks.
