MLB Failing to Eliminate Pace-of-Play Problems By Speeding Up Baseball
InsideHook ^ | September 6th 2019 | EVAN BLEIER

Despite efforts to speed up baseball, the average time of a nine-inning game in Major League Baseball is three hours and five minutes.

That equals the mark which was set in 2017, after which MLB and the players’ association responded by limiting the number of mound visits per game. Other time-saving measures including shortened breaks between innings and eliminating pitches being thrown during intentional walks have been imposed, but MLB games still drag on a snail’s pace.

One of the biggest reasons games are taking so long is that batters are more focused on hitting home runs and pitchers are more focused on getting strikeouts. That combination has led to batters seeing an average of 3.92 pitchers per plate appearance, the highest mark in the 21 seasons the stat has been tracked.

In order to cut down on wasting time with pitching changes, pitchers will be forced to face at least three batters starting next year.

The thing about concession sales is...

lower alcohol prices and speed up the game.

Same results.

Sipping a scotch and watching my Mets beat the Nats from the comfort of my Man cave while hoping the Cubs lose. Fun baseball in September!!!

I'm a lifelong baseball fan. Since my first MLB game when I was 12, I've loved going to games, following closely and keeping a scorecard. Not the past few years.

Playoff baseball is a total turnoff. There are so many delays for advertising that it affects the play. After long breaks, players (especially pitchers) often lose their rhythm.

Regular games are becoming a substitute for a carnival. Ketchup, mustard, and relish have races. There are kiddie parks for kids, assuming they'll be too bored with the game. There's so much stuff on the scoreboard, the favorite song of every player is aired when they come to bat, unless the upper grandstand seats are opened (too much of a walk to leave seats often) it's impossible to follow the game with all of the coming and going.

They keep fiddling with the rules. The weighted schedule means it's more important to be in a lousy division than be one of the best teams to get to the playoffs. Besides that, it skews accomplishment which makes records meaningless. It would be nice if they promoted afternoon weekday games and had more of them.

Why are they so intent on destroying everything that's great and historic about Baseball? (Don't wind me up)

You’ll like this. When I was teaching Geometry, one of the projects I assigned was to give a student a baseball scorecard and have them write a story about the game.

Amen. Let it alone. The game was meant to be played at it’s own pace. Some games may last 2 hours, some will last 7 hours. It is what it is.

I still like my solution. Every batter starts with a 1-1 count. All the other rules revert to circa 1995. It should slice 30-45 minutes off the game that nobody will miss and starting pitchers will stay in games longer.

I wish the electronic strike zone box that appears as the batter steps up would disappear. I want to see th ball, the catcher and the umpire and the batter. No cgi.

Sorry for your loss.

35 year old Kurt Suzuki just hit a three run bomb for a walk off win for the Nationals over the Mets, final score Wash 11, Mets 10

Jack Flaherty just beat the Giants 1-0 in 2:11. He went 8 giving only one hit and Carlos Martinez also only gave up one hit in the 9th. Yaz’s grandson got both hits.

Ozuna hit a solo for the only run. Cards had 5 hits.

I’m a Nats fan...WOW man these bullpens suuuuuuuuuck. I feel for ya we have had that happen a bunch, just usually not that much and all at the end. That’s a franchise record I guess for comebacks in the 9th. But we would probably win a consistently heartbreaking bullpen contest this season.

Put pitchers on the clock, with pickoff moves resetting the clock.

They were doing that in Cactus League this year. It was nothing but a distraction, and did not speed up the game (Dodgers-Rockies), which ended in a tie (no extra innings).

Clocks don't belong in baseball.

Most folks don't appreciate a great pitching duel that may lead to a 1-0 game.

And I'm one of them...BORING...I'd rather see a score of 20-19 even tho the game would take longer...I don't want to see people strike out...I want to see 'em hit the ball...

Baseball is a gift from God and stop juicing the ball. The best idea that I hope becomes a law is for the pitcher to finish the inning. No mid-inning pitching changes. The game is slow now because the manager is stepping out of the dugout toward the mound during an inning a lot. Sheesh.

“Cut the game to 2 innings.
And reduce the outs to one per inning.
One ball is a walk.
One strike is an out.”

Wow. Maybe a little harsh? More: The manager is always right when he argues with the umpire. Ballpark hotdogs are 25¢. And use only one ball during the game: fouls have to be returned.

Re post 8: BINGO.

The sooner baseball adopts electronic calls for balls and strikes, the more relevant it will become.
