MLB Failing to Eliminate Pace-of-Play Problems By Speeding Up Baseball

Despite efforts to speed up baseball, the average time of a nine-inning game in Major League Baseball is three hours and five minutes.

That equals the mark which was set in 2017, after which MLB and the players’ association responded by limiting the number of mound visits per game. Other time-saving measures including shortened breaks between innings and eliminating pitches being thrown during intentional walks have been imposed, but MLB games still drag on a snail’s pace.

One of the biggest reasons games are taking so long is that batters are more focused on hitting home runs and pitchers are more focused on getting strikeouts. That combination has led to batters seeing an average of 3.92 pitchers per plate appearance, the highest mark in the 21 seasons the stat has been tracked.

In order to cut down on wasting time with pitching changes, pitchers will be forced to face at least three batters starting next year.

According to this source, average game times were less then 2 hours before World War II.

Baseball Reference

It actually makes sense, when you think about it. There were no night games before the late 1930s, and it wasn't uncommon for teams to play 35+ doubleheaders in a season.

I have never been to a real big game before, I’d consider that.

‘2) Increase the size of the strike zone. There are currently too many walks because the strike zone for some umpires is ridiculously small. Also standardize the strike zone. There is too much variance. A larger strike zone would encourage batters to swing the bat more. There are too many full counts these days.”

Amen.

Managers don't show smarts anymore. Heck -- they don't even MANAGE anymore. That's why you don't see any more colorful personalities managing MLB teams these days.

How I long for the days of Earl Weaver kicking the dirt on the Umpire...

Yes, but we all want to "speed" up the game.

So now I'm thinking the 7th Inning Stretch needs to be eliminated. Especially since the game should now last only about 45 minutes.

Foul balls are an issue because of a recent change in baseball. Computer analysis shows that swinging for the fences is better than playing small ball. So contact hitting is no longer encouraged, nor is the bunt, hit and run etc. When you swing like a maniac you get the area right but often just foul the ball off. In many ways it has made the game unwatchable. It would be like a QB throwing 30-40 yard bombs every play.

Keep the "God Bless America" for the 7th Inning Stretch. I don't know how many teams are still doing it.

It’s called the National Pastime for a reason. You go to pass the time. The longer it goes, the more time you buy with your ticket. Nothing beats a 20 inning game. That’s only $5 per inning with $100 of tickets and beer.

The only bad thing is when an extra inning game is called on account of rain.

I once went to an Angels game where they were down by 7 in the bottom of the 9th. They scored 9 runs in the last inning. Half the fans had left to beat the traffic.

Patience is the key to enjoying baseball.

As long as it’s not 99 degrees, and your seats are up in the 700 section, it’s very enjoyable... :^)

But then again, that’s all part of it as well.

Greatest Earl Weaver rant of all time:

"You're here, and this crew is here, just to f#%& us!:

LMAO. I don't remember seeing him on TV much when I was a kid, so I had no idea he was so short.

The game is dying unfortunately. They even juiced the ball and it has made the game into a farce. The talent pool is shrinking and there are too many teams as is the case in the other major sports. A good deal of kids are turning their heads into mush on phones and video games.

As long as there are poor kids in the Dominican Republic, there will be baseball players.

If you hit a foul on strike 2, it is considered strike 3 and you are OUT!

this would knock an hour off every game...

Watching baseball is the best 3 hours I spend in the evening.

I concur, presently sitting at my local watering hole watching the Red Sox and Twins. I have faith that we* can get to the wild card.

I went to Chris Sale’s last game. I felt gyped even though we won, because it was over so soon.

* the Red Sox of course.
