Lisa Stansfield, one of the best female pop singers ever. Today is the first time I've heard her voice. Amazing voice, God-given talent. I love great vocals, glad I discovered her tonight.

Well, I still listen to Janis Joplin and Rickie Lee Jones myself. I bought the “Balm in the Gilead” CD when it came out. When I saw this Lisa Stansfield was British I immediately thought of Shirley Bassey and Petula Clark. I’m just stuck in a time warp myself and will not even listen to modern releases.

Libba Cotten played in the student lounge in Montgomery Co., Md. (@ 1970) She played backward and upside-down (self taught) and I was *this far* from her, amazing experience; up so close to a legend!

We’d go to the Flick on double dates in H.S. (they didn’t serve alcohol) and Jimmy Buffet was the opening act for the *real* headliner, the ‘star’- which was Dion, the first time I went there. I can say, it was the first time I ever heard a true, professionally modulated voice. He sang Purple Haze, of all things! and that reverb/echo-ey thing he does is his own voice, without special effects, just him.

I also had never heard of her, but that isn’t my kind of music anyway. Yes, she has a good voice, but like a million others I’d say her music is so-so. A good voice is only one part of the process, in my opinion. To get my vote, you need an exceptional voice(which maybe she has)& also very meaningful songs,music, & backup.

The web and Spotify and Pandora are the most amazing inventions. We can sample music we never had access to before, have the machines make excellent recommendations, add to playlists, etc. I wish these inventions were available when I was young. Back then I had to scrimp and save to by a vinyl album for $3 and, as carefully as I cared for them, would get scratchy from playing. Now I have my music collection on a 10 TB home NAS server and play it via the excellent BlueSound streamer and their superb software. But over the past couple years, I’ve been playing my collection less and less and using Spotify more and more. Fortunately (in one sense) these old ears are satisfied with the sound quality of Spotify and I don’t need the more limited collection on Tidal.
I had never heard of Libba Cotten until reading about Giddens and her tribute to Cotten. I’ll have to start listening to Cotten.
I heard a number of Doris Day songs after she passed a little while ago. I was impressed with her — didn’t know she was such a great singer.
Funny you mentioned Julie Andrews. She spoke at our son’s graduation six years ago and was a very inspirational speaker. We didn’t get to hear her sing, though.
Like you, I prefer the female voice, too. I have a Spotify playlist “Female Vocalists” and I frequently add new female artists as I find them.
