Lisa Stansfield, one of the best female pop singers ever. Today is the first time I've heard her voice. Amazing voice, God-given talent. I love great vocals, glad I discovered her tonight.
Tremendous set of pipes, fabulously expressive interpretations, all done seemingly without effort, and more beautiful and sexy than Aphrodite. Just fabulous!

Enjoy.
Well, I still listen to Janis Joplin and Rickie Lee Jones myself. I bought the “Balm in the Gilead” CD when it came out. When I saw this Lisa Stansfield was British I immediately thought of Shirley Bassey and Petula Clark. I’m just stuck in a time warp myself and will not even listen to modern releases.
A different kind of music, too loud and heavy on rhythm for me
She is one of my favorites! Another great singer lost to drugs and alcohol.
This has always been one of my all time favorites...even used in an episode of “Chuck”
Nina Simone - “Feeling Good”

Rickie Lee Jones, at the beginning of her career, was living with the GREAT Tom Waits. She is featured on the back cover of Waits' classic album, "Blue Valentines"
Because the main stream media, who control almost all access to information, made sure you never found out about her.
Thus, we should continue to support places like FreeRepublic so we CAN find out about folks like her.
JoMa
Agreed. WAY overproduced, mediocre voice.
Maybe its just me....Im an old fart.
One with great taste!
As a little gal with a big voice, and often paid very nicely for using it, I second your post and if you should pass away in my neck of the woods I'll belt one out at the services, no charge. :-*
Another one to try is Renee Olstead. Absolutely amazing voice! Give a listen: https://youtu.be/3uhuh2cRJAo
All of the real talent has moved to YouTube. It’s amazing what you can find there.
Try this. https://youtu.be/eZsVlyeXsbM
Libba Cotten played in the student lounge in Montgomery Co., Md. (@ 1970) She played backward and upside-down (self taught) and I was *this far* from her, amazing experience; up so close to a legend!
Joni Mitchell was discovered at ‘The Flick’ in Miami Springs, Fla. and she was brought out to Laurel Springs - the ‘Canyon’, where she hooked up with Graham Nash, Micky Dolenz, Mama Cass (now SHE could belt ‘em out!), and others, Hendicks, Zappa...there are various documentaries on that period of time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26WVPhVZ0lM is one.
We’d go to the Flick on double dates in H.S. (they didn’t serve alcohol) and Jimmy Buffet was the opening act for the *real* headliner, the ‘star’- which was Dion, the first time I went there. I can say, it was the first time I ever heard a true, professionally modulated voice. He sang Purple Haze, of all things! and that reverb/echo-ey thing he does is his own voice, without special effects, just him.

I appreciate these threads on FR, especially bc I’m an old fart too, and like discovering new things like that Rhiannon Giddens sample, and if that’s a style you like, you might like Kate Wolf. She’s mellow, not a ‘belter’

Someone mentioned Streisand, but I was a fan of the one who actually wrote (& played in her own right) several of Streisand’s hits - Laura Nyro. I saw her perform at Duke, and she was perfectly beautiful!

Sadly, SO sadly, she and Kate Wolf died young (leukemia IIRC).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld9cqhnsFa8 is one of Laura’s albums. She was a unique genius, and the world is poorer for her passing.
I’ve always preferred the female voice, and am drawn to unique talents, who compose, play, and perform their own material...Joan Armatrading being a notable example:

Most of the ‘high end’ singers can span 4 octaves:
Minnie Ripperton, Julie Andrews, Art Garfunkle
but here’s one who can control 5! HE is the most outstanding voice I have ever heard, bar none. Dimash, in a singer competition:

even the “reaction videos” are fun to watch:

I also had never heard of her, but that isn’t my kind of music anyway. Yes, she has a good voice, but like a million others I’d say her music is so-so. A good voice is only one part of the process, in my opinion. To get my vote, you need an exceptional voice(which maybe she has)& also very meaningful songs, music, & backup.
Thanks, Spank. I Look forward to sampling all the artists you linked. I know of many of the names and some of the music, but not all. I’m probably of the same vintage as you, 68 now. I agree the Laurel Canyon days were just amazing.
The web and Spotify and Pandora are the most amazing inventions. We can sample music we never had access to before, have the machines make excellent recommendations, add to playlists, etc. I wish these inventions were available when I was young. Back then I had to scrimp and save to by a vinyl album for $3 and, as carefully as I cared for them, would get scratchy from playing. Now I have my music collection on a 10 TB home NAS server and play it via the excellent BlueSound streamer and their superb software. But over the past couple years, I’ve been playing my collection less and less and using Spotify more and more. Fortunately (in one sense) these old ears are satisfied with the sound quality of Spotify and I don’t need the more limited collection on Tidal.
I had never heard of Libba Cotten until reading about Giddens and her tribute to Cotten. I’ll have to start listening to Cotten.
I heard a number of Doris Day songs after she passed a little while ago. I was impressed with her — didn’t know she was such a great singer.
Funny you mentioned Julie Andrews. She spoke at our son’s graduation six years ago and was a very inspirational speaker. We didn’t get to hear her sing, though.
Like you, I prefer the female voice, too. I have a Spotify playlist “Female Vocalists” and I frequently add new female artists as I find them.
Another great voice, thanks tallyhoe.
Will listen to all the videos posted by everyone. Have to leave for work soon, but am looking forward to hearing each one.
BookMarking great music
Karen Carpenter, Olivia Newton-John: please shoot me. Just no. Lisa Stansfield, too nasal for my taste.
OTOH, I love the Divas of the 30s-50s Cleo Laine, Rosemary Clooney, Bille Holliday, and especially Peggy Lee.
That Cleo Laine clip brings to mind Ella Fitzgerald doing that great scat thing she did:
