New proof of link between obesity and disease

The University of South Australia's Australian Centre for Precision Health researchers examined links between body mass index (BMI) and more than 925 diseases in 337536 UK volunteers, confirming the link between obesity and conditions such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

"We conducted five different analyses and the more consistent the evidence for a causal association between obesity and health outcomes across these five different approaches, the more confident we could be that we were looking at the true causal effect," Professor Hypponen said.

She said while previous research suggested a high BMI was linked with increased risk of chronic diseases, the clinical trials used to asses health risks of obesity were typically too small or too short to assess causation with many of the diseases.

To overcome this challenge, Professor Hypponen said they used alternative statistical approaches.

"The results were really quite astounding," she said.

"Fully consistent evidence across all approaches was seen for 14 different diseases, and for 26 different diseases evidence was obtained by at least four of the five methods used.

Professor Hypponen said while all five of the approaches used to help prove causation rely on a number of statistical assumptions by working through each of the approaches, they were able to note consistent evidence of causal association.

One of the key findings, according to Professor Hypponen, was the strong the relationship observed between obesity and diabetes.

"For example, we saw evidence for obesity effects on peripheral nerve disorders, chronic leg and foot ulcers, and even gangrene and kidney failure, which are all known to be diabetic complications.

"This suggests a key aspect to reduce comorbidity risk in obesity is careful monitoring of blood sugar and effective control of diabetes and its complications."

It looks like out of 925 diseases, 26 of the diseases reviewed had high indicators of being influenced by obesity that were not previously identified as such, if I read this correctly.

It seems like only 40 diseases are impacted largely by obesity (14 + 26).

I would have thought it was more.

And when we have our private health insurance jerked out from under us by the Democrats and we are all stuck with "Medicare for All" government-rationed health care, the Government will say "sorry, we can't put you on the Heart Stent surgery list until you lose 75 lbs."

My BIL is a walking example of this theory. Everyday I expect him to keel over. The doctors have been warning him for years. He will not lose weight. He just says give me a pill.

Does the obesity predispose the person to disease or does the disease predispose a person to obesity?

“Does the obesity predispose the person to disease or does the disease predispose a person to obesity?”

Both. It is a cycle.

I know overweight people who complain about their knees, and their back. Obviously, one place to start would be to lose all excess weight.

One of my sisters passed away a year ago in May from chronic obesity and lack of exercise. She sat in a chair and texted her adult children to wait on her. They still live in the same house, together. It’s just sad.

Reduce inflammation in the body, that’s the key. Get plenty of Omega-3 fats, and reduce carbs.

I would be curious as to the average lifespans of Holocaust Survivors. My theory is that they probably did have a longer average life span, because literally “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger”.

Not exactly breaking news. A solution to this problem would be though. Find a magic anti-fat pill to increase metabolism, decrease appetite, and do it without increasing heart rate or blood pressure. That would be news.

“Fat people get sick more.”

You may be missing the gist of the article. It isn’t saying in this article that obesity causes illness. It’s saying illnesses like diabetes and others cause obesity that causes other illnesses. From the article:

“....the link between genetic obesity risks and more than 900 disease outcomes.”

There is no such thing as fat people. There are reasons why people get obese. The one they mention in the article is diabetes. I’m one of those people that is overweight because I’m insulin resistant and depend upon injected insulin to offset the problem which I have been practicing since 1987. And no matter what you do with your diet, the requirement changes everyday. It has nothing to do with calorie, carb, or fiber intake. It is an illness that causes fat storage especially around the core body area. So if your pancreas decides to pump more bad insulin into your system today, you are at that mercy and have to correct the best you can. But you’re going to lose. And anyone who is hyperglycemic, faces this issue. The opposite, hypo, main problem is staying up with the food intake needs. But they face the same problems as each can be deadly when the blood sugar goes too low. It’s a crap shoot everyday.

So the article is misleading. It is not a link from obesity to disease, It is a link from and between disease to disease. And we already knew that. They could have wasted the money saving some fly somewhere.
