Studios are learning this summer that audiences have no time for their tired franchises.
This weekend it's Sony that's taking the lumps as "Men in Black: International," the first "MIB" movie in seven years, opened with a franchise-low $28.5 million at the domestic box office.
The first "Men in Black" in 1997 previously had the lowest opening with $51 million, but back then that was really good. In fact, if you count inflation, that would be a $100 million opening today.
The $28.5 million performance, though number one at the domestic box office for the weekend, is below Sony's $30 million opening weekend projection, which most felt was a little too ambitious seeing how the weekend was shaping out.

Well also watching a movie a few months later on a million different streaming sites has taken a lot of business.
i usually wait until they are free on the site a year or so down the road but even if it’s 5 bucks, it’s not 50 for 2 people in a theater, if i dont like it im only out 5
Its Hollywoods lack of being able to come up with anything new. Its all about rebooting older subject matter. I for one could care less about MIB4, heck MIB3 was boring. Come up with something new that is good and the box office will bounce back.
The Pretty Womyn thing wouldn’t work so well as in the original, Richard Gerbil’s character picks her up because he can’t drive a car with a stick shift. We all know that trannies can’t drive a stick anymore.
Stupid? OK,maybe...but it was damn fun (the original,I mean). And yes,I like the Three Stooges too!
A correct title true to actual sci-fi usage “Terrans in Black”. None of the sexist connotations and fits with the interstellar meme of the franchise.
The actress starring in it is a spectacularly vile individual.””
I caught a 3 second glimpse of her as I channel surfed and she looked so sour, slitty-eyed and venemous that I made a mental never to bother.
Thats why I watch almost exclusively British mystery shows now. They are far less PC than American shows.
The whole franchise is based upon the MIB ‘meme’ in popular, conspiracy-UFO culture. Separating from that destroys the entire basis. I can’t recall a single ‘woman in black’ from any of the classic UFO literature.
"if a movie breaks even a lot of people have made a lot of money."
There are many costs, such as inflated executive producer salaries, that are included in the overall production costs.
This weekend’s box office wiped out two franchises, cemented the failure of two others, and mercy-killed one of those woke entries only pompous critics adore.
We’ll start with Men in Black: International, which is doing even worse than those already-dire predictions of $30 million. Deadline reports this stinker will open to a pathetic $25 million, which is less than half of what all three of its predecessors opened to. Even the 22-year-old original launched with $51 million in 22-year-old dollars.
As I mentioned in my review, MIB4 has no swagger, no sex appeal, and no laughs; just a confusing story, bad special effects, and a bland leading man who is treated like an imbecile because he’s white and hetero and we must now grovel before the woke.
This is the second franchise Hemsworth has helped destroy by allowing himself to be publicly emasculated. The first was that dreadful Ghostbusters remake.
Samuel L. Jackson’s Shaft had been projected to land in the $15 to $20 million range. In the real world it crash landed at $8 million.
Eight million for a name brand with a name star opening in nearly 2400 theaters.
How is that even possible?
Well, for whatever lunatic reason, Warner Bros. decided to turn a 48-year-old franchise built on grit and testosterone into a lame family sitcom.
[...]
What in the world was Warner Bros. thinking?
A franchise about a “bad mother-shut-your-mouth” is now The Aging Bickersons.
John Shaft, the John Shaft (The Mighty Richard Roundtree), the original bad mother-shut-your-mouth is now Bad Grandpa?
It does appear youre wrong. The production budget for MIB International is reported to be $110 million. That does not include marketing, which is separate. Of course theres no way to know for sure what the exact numbers are. As you point out, studio accounting is shady at best. The distributor gets a smaller percentage of overseas revenues compared to domestic, but spends much less for promotion, etc. Suffice it to say that after TV rights and DVD sales this flick will make money but its not a blockbuster.
Still waiting for THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN with an all girl international cast. A black, white, Chinese, Feather Indian, dot Indian, Papuan, and a tranny, all freeing the poor from the evil white men.
+. lols.....
I do enjoy Midsommer Murders but I have two nits to pick. One, the new detective character who replaced his cousin is not nearly as likable. Two, with all those limeys getting offed that little hamlet must have a higher murder rate than the south side of Chicago.
Another boring feminist sermon.
He’s also emasculated in the last Avengers movie.
The first one was a political correctness indoctrination. It opens with the MIB releasing Mexicans from the evil border patrol, then during the testing to join MIB, Will Smith shoots a ten year old white girl in the head, cause she had no business in the ghetto in the middle of the night with Quantum Physics books.
