Young people blame climate change for their small 401(k) balances

Lori Rodriguez, a 27-year-old communications professional in New York City, is not saving for retirement, and it isn’t necessarily because she can’t afford to — it’s because she doesn’t expect it to matter.

Like many people her age, Rodriguez believes climate change will have catastrophic effects on our planet. Some 88% of millennials — a higher percentage than any other age group — accept that climate change is happening, and 69% say it will impact them in their lifetimes. Engulfed in a constant barrage of depressing news stories, many young people are skeptical about saving for an uncertain future.

“I want to hope for the best and plan for a future that is stable and secure, but, when I look at current events and at the world we are predicting, I do not see how things could not be chaotic in 50 years,” Rodriguez says. “The weather systems are already off, and I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to be a little apocalyptic.”

Obviously, this young lady doesn’t understand the concept of being scammed. Can someone here teach her the more intricate parts of “Three Card Monte”, or maybe put her in touch with that “Ethiopian Prince Guy”?

So they’ll have nothing in their 401ks and Social Security will be in serious trouble by then too, if it even lasts that long.

Time to invest in retirement trailer parks.

Well, for most of my adult life interest rates have been kept artificially below 1%, so that really doesn’t work like it used to.

She has a point. I didn’t start saving for retirement until a LONG time after 27. The money in hand was needed for other stuff.

And even absent climate nonsense, payments on the national debt will inevitably overtake GDP. Congress won’t cut spending and the executive won’t shrink. I can’t imagine what will happen when the US is bankrupt and other nations won’t buy our bonds.

Some of these folks may have real concerns about any possible/potential economic future, but to blame it on climate change is the height of stupidity.

When I was starting out in the workforce back in the 1970s, the big scare was overpopulation and famine. The world was going to run out of food by 1990 and there was NOTHING WE COULD DO ABOUT IT according to the scaremongers of that time (Paul Erhlich being one obnoxious example).

Not to mention that we were going to run out of GASOLINE and we were going to all die in a NUCLEAR WAR and if that didn't happen, the earth would get SMASHED BY A COMET. Back in 1979, the future looked bleak indeed. Not to mention that disco music was still going strong.

But I started saving for retirement anyway. Good thing I did because I'm somehow still here in 2019 looking at a retirement nest egg in seven figures. None of that aforementioned stuff killed me so I guess I'm a SURVIVOR!

...buy burlap and make a purse for the wife myself

You can buy 20 pounds of Bismati rice from Nepal and when it’s gone, use the bag for the purse. It already has handles and a zipper.

No sense being extravagant.

we used to have to wear corduroy pants- which, while warm in winter, didn’t last very long- would wear holes in them pretty quick- the material was dirt cheap back then, and my mom would make us pants, vests, jackets etc- Think we might have even had mittens made from it- but never burlap lol- thankfully-

"Young people blame climate change for their small 401(k) balances"

It's name is comrade dictator "barack hussein obama," and not "climate change."
