FULL TITLE: Country House sensationally wins the Kentucky Derby after first-place finisher Maximum Security is DISQUALIFIED following steward's inquiry for impeding other riders

Country House has won the 2019 Kentucky Derby.

The long-shot horse, with odds of 65-1, was declared the winner of the world-famous $3 million race on Saturday, after Maximum Security was sensationally disqualified in a stewards' call.

Maximum Security crossed the line first, but its championship title was revoked after judges ruled that the thoroughbred had impeded other riders by changing lanes at the final turn.

The 150,000 spectators who descended on Churchill Downs in Louisville to watch the world-famous race were forced to wait for more than 20 minutes for a victor to be declared.

Shortly after 7 pm, Country House was crowned the winner after officials disqualified Maximum Security for the foul.

The shock decision marks the first time in the race's 145 year history that the victor has been changed on the day.

Because the horse had to pull up after being bumped more than once. As others have stated, the jockey for #1 deserves a lot of credit for keeping his horse and those around him from having a spill of any kind. If there is anything positive to take away from that race, it’s that.

Before this, I didn’t really care about the Preakness. Now I really want Maximum Security to win. I think he will.

“This just in: Hillary wants to know if there can be a steward’s inquiry into the 2016 election.”

That tired old nag should have been sent to the glue factory. It was cruel to run her again.

Yes; but horses First - much of civilization itself began on their backs, and from their work!

That’s why I won’t eat them. There are instances where it’s important to show proper respect.

(Fortunately, I don’t have to make moral choices about eating trucks... :-)

It was a minor incident....NOT !

I was really impressed the way your horse won his maiden at Churchill in the mud. He was in position today to make his move, gaining momentum and bred for the distance. I really liked the horse but just assumed with the draw he’d never be in the position to make that move into the stretch. But you’re right, these things happen all the time. Good call on betting him.

They race WAY too many horses at once. This sort of thing, and far worse, is inevitable.

Country House beats the “big house”....

...which is where some of today’s “lucky” winners will be headed in due time.

SoCal admissions scandal, anyone?

There is a new sheriff in the DOJ.

Your post 33.

Shows clearly why they took him down. Thanks for posting the video.

The horse that finished second- Country House was moved up to first because they disqualified the winner-Maximum Security for cutting off the 1 horse, plus another horse was also cut off.

The best and fastest horse did not win. Waiting for the Belmont Stakes for redemption.

I’ve only ever been to one horse race in my life, a friend of mine who was a big handicapper took me.
He had tons of statistics and facts about all the horses, where they were bred, where the did all their races and practices, how many races they won, and what types of tracks.
I didn’t even know there was a difference between grass, dirt, and mud tracks.
Did ranch work for my uncle when I was a kid, the only thing our horses seemed to care about the terrain was if it was uphill, downhill, or flat.
Wet, dry, grass, or dirt, didn’t seem to bother them.
My friend told me what horses to bet on and the order to bet after we saw them in the loading area.
I ignored him and bet the horse that looked to me like it wanted to run, and it ran.
DAMN DID IT RUN.
I walked away with 90 dollars on a 3 dollar bet and Michael Page (the friend who took me) walked away with nothing.
NEVER BEEN TO ANOTHER HORSE RACE.

"if they went around 5 more times, none were gonna beat the 7 horse.."

Not the point. Maximum Security was disqualified for cutting off the 1 horse and cutting off another horse. Can't cut off other horses. It's dangerous. See the video at post 33 .

Yes, because stewards are only ever jockeys.

Please.

Total and complete interference. And MS was placed 17th behind the #18 Long Range Toddy who finished 16th because he totally folded after that egregious interference.

It’s a shame, but it was the RIGHT call.

Please also bear in mind that the jock on MS on the return stated his horse was scared by the crowd, and that MS has minimal experience....just 4 starts. Further, CH was a poor horse who MAY very well have benefitted from the slop, so there is no reason he shouldn’t have placed high while “good” horses couldn’t stand it.

Yes, it does, that’s a good gif. The move caused the nearest horse to change his stride, and if that had not happened it would have come in before the declared winner.

The reason preventative rules like this cannot be ignored is because pretty soon fudging the rules will become widespread- and jockeys will be pressured to push them -until eventually some horse clips another, and in a pack like that, if one stumbles or goes down, it’s probable it will cause a chain reaction. Nothing ruins a day at the races like seeing one or more fine horses put down. An occasional disqualification isn’t going to ruin the sport but a preventable pileup and injured horses would blacken the sport for sure.
