Neck cracking caused 28-year-old man to suffer a stroke, doctor says

GUTHRIE, Okla. -- A 28-year-old from Oklahoma had a stroke caused by popping his neck, according to KOCO.

Doctors said the act of popping his neck caused Josh Hader to tear his vertebral artery.

"The moment I heard the pop, everything on my left side started to go numb," Hader said. "I got up and tried to get an ice pack from the fridge, and I remember I couldn't walk straight."

As bad as this all sounds, Hader's doctor said it could have been even worse.

"He could have formed more clot on that tear and had a life-ending stroke," Dr. Vance McCollom said. "He could have died."

Hader survived his stroke, but it did cause a lot of damage -- he had vision problems for a few days and still struggles to walk. Hader also had painful hiccups for a week-and-a-half.

But Hader said the hardest part of the whole ordeal has been not being able to help his wife take care of their youngest son.

"I can't pick him up out of the crib, give him milk in the middle of the night," he said. "I can't do any of that."

According to McCollom, there is a right and wrong way to pop your neck.

"If you want to pop your neck, just kind of pop it side to side," McCollom said. "Don't twist it. Whenever you twist it, there's a risk of tearing that vessel."

I used to do that a bunch. Don’t anymore 1) they began warning about injuries and such a while back, plus 2) I can’t make ‘em crack anyway, even when it feels like I need it.

This is horrible, and I pray he recovers function, but it is NOT uncommon. In fact, carotid dissection is the most common cause of stroke in young people. It has also been reported in women who were having their hair washed (leaning back in the sink) at a hairdresser, and in people having cervical manipulation by a chiropractor.

A friend in med school used to crack other students necks by moving back and forth and then crack. When he asked me if I wanted a neck crack I said NO!

Same thing happened with me years ago. A friend of a friend at a Friday night get-together. Med student cracking necks while laying on the floor. A quick twist a multiple cracks. Who knows if she knew what she was doing. I’ve thought about that many times since. I wouldn’t touch that scene with a 10 foot pole now.

Sad.
I had a stroke when I was 31.

What’s ‘twisting’ vs side to side? I have a lot of muscle tightness throughout my neck muscles. I try to stretch regularly and hope to work through it through exercise. Want to make sure i avoid anything like this. Yikes.

How do you even do this? Not that I want to try, just want to understand it. I can’t even picture it.

Usually rapid twisting of the neck, sometimes using the jaw as a lever.....

Don't twist it. Whenever you twist it there's a risk of breaking that vessel...well, that's the way Steven Seagal and all the other guys in the movies - good and bad - dispose of their adversaries......

Bear in mind that the same injury happened to my brother in law when he stretched back to catch a fly ball over his head while playing men's league baseball. Stretch, lift head, POP, stroke. He recovered but because of the risk never played baseball again.

Some people have a weakness in that vessel, he was one of them and this fellow was probably another.

We go to an upper cervical guy every so often and he is good.

I know the doctor that trained him and that guy was super picky about who he wanted.

It’s done wonders for me, way beyond regular chiro.
