The jawbone of a little-known form of ancient human has been discovered in western China. Scientists say these people lived as long as 150,000 years ago, and they were part of a group called Denisovans.
The Denisovans are a mystery. Up until now, their only remains a few bone fragments and teeth came from a cave called Denisova in Siberia.
In 2010, scientists concluded from those fragments and their DNA that Denisovans were slightly different from us Homo sapiens and slightly different from Neanderthals, but that they lived contemporaneously. In short, they were a third kind of human.

Interesting article
GGG ping.
Neat stuff.
So that’s where the Abominable Snowman tales come from!................
All Denesovians but from different populations.
The Pacific Islanders are the oldest, East Asians next then Siberians and American Indians last at about 15,000 years.(Yup, they're saying Denesovians may have been around as recent as 15k years ago)
Did Ivan T. Sanderson know about this?
Interesting photo from NATGEO showing where we all fit in, if someone can post it:

In before the god botherers.
There were three branches: Shem, Ham, Japheth. Someone has finally found the last one of them. < /s >
23andMe tells people how much Neanderthal ancestry they have. How soon will they be able to measure Denisovan ancestry? (That is assuming that “anatomically modern” Homo sapiens and Denisovans got together and made babies.)
One of the moons of Saturn is named Iapetus.
In the Septuagint, "Japheth" is spelled Iota-alpha-phi-epsilon-theta and "Javan" is spelled Iota-omega-upsilon-alpha-nu.
It's being done now. Pacific Islanders have the highest percentage of Denisovian DNA today.
They recently found a skeleton 'fragment' that indicated that person had a Neanderthal mother and a Densiovian father.
Startling Discovery: Ancient Mixed-Race Girl Had Neanderthal And Denisovan Parents
"[The sample was from] a hybrid daughter of a Neanderthal mother and a Denisovan father. She was nicknamed Denny. If you had asked me beforehand, I would have said we will never find this, it is like finding a needle in a haystack, Pääbo told Nature."
Fascinating article; Thanks for the post
Thanks Innovative, and Red Badger for the related link in FReepmail.
I used Ancestry dot com for my DNA, and they weren't doing that for customers in 2017 -- but they had a link to an archaic DNA project, and my Neandertal DNA was accompanied by Denisovan DNA, which really, really surprised me.
Got it. Thanks!

One suggestion is that the cave represents a border outpost for both species, one that was situated at the very eastern edge of the range of the Neanderthals, who were primarily a European species, and at the very western tip of the homelands of the Denisovans, who were an eastern species. Occasionally members from both groups would have reached the cave at the same time with amorous consequences.
It is an idea borne out by detailed studies of Dennys Neanderthal mother. Her genes show a particularly close affinity with Neanderthals who lived in Croatia, suggesting that the immediate predecessors of Dennys mother may have been part of a group who slowly migrated east from Europe towards Denisova where she encountered Dennys father at the outer edges of each others homelands.
