INTELLECTUAL ROCK: My Favorite Listening Music

Posted on 04/21/2019 6:36:15 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

My friends there is such a thing. It makes you want to listen closely to the lyrics. My examples would be Emerson, Lake, and Palmer "From the Beginning". Then there's Elton with "Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters." Yes-"I've Seen All Good People and Rod Stewart's "Gasoline Alley". It makes your ears work a bit but worth it. Funny how it's mostly 70's music.

I suppose “Teenage Kicks” by the Undertones doesn’t count?

It’s a good escape from the hard rock that glorifies boners.

Blues begat Rock. The music discussed in this article is good (well most of it). But it does not fit the blues rock(or rockabilly) mold. It’s pop with a bit of a rock beat.

I have no kick against modern jazz
Unless they try to play it too darn fast
And change the beauty of the melody
Until they sound just like a symphony
That’s why I go for that rock and roll music
Any old way you choose it
It’s got a back beat, you can’t lose it
Any old time you use it
It’s gotta be rock and roll music
If you want to dance with me
If you want to dance with me

Chuck Berry

Weeeell....Dinah-Moe doesn't really leave much to the imagination. Who Needs the Peace Corps? or I'm the Slime or even Tinseltown Rebellion make you sit up and ponder things. Music is the best.

Lightning Crashes sounds boring. Rockabilly is not intellectual. It makes you want to move around-not the purpose here.

Actually the very non-70’s Symphonic Metal is more to my taste.

Lyrics are a waste of time.
Melody and musical skill are everything.

Combining a Metal band, a first class opera capable soprano and occasionally a full symphony backup, can make for some very impressive music.

Try Nightwish (with Tarja), Without Temptation or Epica and you will get the idea.

Within Temptation has a nice beat but it’s still too much music. Lyrics are lost or buried. It’s hard to like a song the first time its heard. 7-’s music certainly has stood the test.

Would Al Stewart’s Roads to Moscow and On the Border apply? Or is that more History Rock?

How about Stewart’s Year of the Cat? Peter Lorrie contemplating a crime? That goes WAY back.
