I suppose “Teenage Kicks” by the Undertones doesn’t count?

Blues begat Rock. The music discussed in this article is good (well most of it). But it does not fit the blues rock(or rockabilly) mold. It’s pop with a bit of a rock beat.

I have no kick against modern jazz
Unless they try to play it too darn fast
And change the beauty of the melody
Until they sound just like a symphony
That’s why I go for that rock and roll music
Any old way you choose it
It’s got a back beat, you can’t lose it
Any old time you use it
It’s gotta be rock and roll music
If you want to dance with me
If you want to dance with me

Chuck Berry

Actually the very non-70’s Symphonic Metal is more to my taste.

Lyrics are a waste of time.
Melody and musical skill are everything.

Combining a Metal band, a first class opera capable soprano and occasionally a full symphony backup, can make for some very impressive music.

Try Nightwish (with Tarja), Without Temptation or Epica and you will get the idea.

I’ve never done street drugs, but always favored acid rock.

Peter Gabriel (within and without Genesis) always had thought-provoking material.

His third solo album (melt) is one of my faves.

The whole album is great IMHO, especially the title track. What other hand would use an oboe?

Oh, you must be referring to that genre of rock for silly girls...

Because real rock is a manly venture.

If intellectual music means mind engaging and rich, it’s hard to find any in rock aside from heavy metal. Moving outside the genre, intellectual music means Mozart and Wagner. Specifically, Mozart 40 and Wagner’s Ring series.

Great thread!

Steely Dan can also be categorized as intellectual rock! From their "Can't Buy a Thrill" LP:

Reelin' In the Years

Kick butt guitar by Elliott Randall!

When I saw "Intellectual Rock" in the title, I was sure I was going to come here and find some Rush fans.

My musical tastes cover a wide gamut and I can get into pretty much any kind of rock (or classical, country, jazz and blues for that matter). I'm still mining the decade of the 1970s however. I recently discovered the pre-Steve Perry Journey albums. Pretty good stuff despite the stupid album art.
