The first image of a black hole has been captured by astronomers, heralding a revolution in our understanding of the universes most enigmatic objects.
The picture shows a halo of dust and gas, tracing the outline of a colossal black hole, at the heart of the Messier 87 galaxy, 55 million light years from Earth.
The black hole itself a cosmic trapdoor from which neither light nor matter can escape is unseeable. But the latest observations take astronomers right to its threshold for the first time, illuminating the event horizon beyond which all known physical laws break down.

Waiting for the inevitability of the left calling a black holes racist!!
Whoops sorry I automatically put an A in front of it...
Well that ain't exactly true. From both poles a relativistic jet shoots out plasma at near light speed.
Wrong hole.
“Waiting for the inevitability of the left calling a black holes racist!!”
John Wiley Price of Dallas already did, years ago.
Looks like a glazed donut.
Thanks for the picture.
There’s an illustration at the source that explains what we’re seeing and here’s the caption:
What the Event Horizon Telescope image shows us
Gravity bends light from the disc around the black hole, giving it the appearance of a halo regardless of what angle it is viewed from.
Looks like a donut.
Mmmmmmmm.....
Glazed donut........
A black hole has spherical characteristics - it is a sphere. A doughnut is flat in one plane. A sphere can't have a doughnut "around" it. It may very well be that an image of the system may look like a doughnut from a single observation point far away. However, the actual 'ring of gas' cannot be a doughnut that just 'happens' to be perpendicular to our observation point. It must actually be a 'sphere of gas'.
Deconstructing Harry (1997)
The Hooker: Cookie Williams (Hazelle Goodman), the tough-talking African-American prostitute who may be about the only friend the misanthropic writer Harry Block (Woody Allen) has. If you ask her if she knows what a black hole is, she’ll respond, “That’s how I make my living.”
Ping just because it is.
Wrong thread.
It’s a plasma donut.
Fascinating!
