A doughnut is flat in one plane. A sphere can't have a doughnut "around" it. It may very well be that an image of the system may look like a doughnut from a single observation point far away. However, the actual 'ring of gas' cannot be a doughnut that just 'happens' to be perpendicular to our observation point. It must actually be a 'sphere of gas'.
