I started with a cheap AR...Then I realized all the upgrades and aftermarkets you can swap out, and how you can buy uppers of different calibers for a single lower, and how you can start to build your own uppers and lowers with custom parts, etc, etc...Its addictive...and will cost a whole lot more than you originally thought and you will enjoy spending every spare penny of your money on it. LOL.
Too big for concealed carry.
I think a little more info for analysis would be helpful. Got a link? What kind of money are we talking about?
Ok, so BEST, I’d say Daniel Defense. But this is like saying a Ferrari is “better” than a Toyota Camry. May be a true statement, but what do you really need? Daniel Defense or Bravo Company are like the Ferraris of firearms, when maybe you just need a Toyota or Honda.
A reasonably priced Smith & Wesson, or a SIG if you can get a good deal on one, may be what you need.
Most people don’t need a $4000 rifle. They need a $600 rifle and $3400 in classes.
Have you looked a bull-pups? The Tavor series is especially nice!
You'll probably need to provide the experts here on FR (which I am *not* one of when it comes to AR15s) more information on your intended use(s), budget, pertinent laws in your area, etc. Then you'll get a virtual avalanche of advice on manufacturers, barrel lengths, twists, buffer tubes, upper/lowers, direct vs piston systems, optics vs open sights, "furniture" such as stocks/grips/rails, lights, slings, ammo, mags... Yes, I'm not an expert - I only know enough to know there's a ton I don't know about them - other than the off-the-shelf one I bought years ago is a lot of fun to shoot, not so much fun to clean. ;-)
I dont know anything about guns but if I did know something about guns I would suggest getting a Colt model LE6920.
Seems a non sequitur to me. Who needs an imported AR-15 when the very best are all superb American made product lines. This is one place I would skip on an unknown company with 'importer' in its name.
What do you mean by “good”?
The best one is the one you built yourself
Start with a PCR-80 and finish it to your specifications
Keymod handguards are less desirable these days than an M-Lok handguard. Accessories for Keymod are being phased out, while M-Lok is expanding.
If you are looking for low cost with decent quality, I suggest you check out Palmetto State Armory.
Right after that LV shooting when the media was screaming about banning AR’s I went and bought a Ruger 556. Love shooting it, beautifully accurate.
Bought my AR-15 from a local home-based dealer, retired Air Force armorer, for under $600. Scope from Amazon, handle from dealer. Added a sling, soft case, and Plano All Weather Tactical Case (for airline travel). Picked up a Total investment Under $900.

Nikon P-223 BDC 600, Model 8497.
Get the cheapest functional one you can find. You’ll lose less when the government gives them the New Zealand treatment.
I started off with a Troy upper (Complete) and mounted it on a Cross Machine Tools lower. Modified, added, subtracted and before I knew it I was a class 07 FFL making my own.
Be prepared to spend some money. If you don’t really know what you want quite yet, just pick up a Smith &Wesson from a gun show; they go for around 450.00 and will get you into the market so you can try and decide for yourself as you move along in this game.
As others have stated, take lessons. I’ve been a shooter for a very long time and I still do rifle and pistol lessons to this day. Its always good to get others professional input on things like how you are shooting.
What you really need is the Armat M41A Pulse Rifle chambered in 10mm.
The Colonial Marines swear by it.
ATI is among the last manufacturers I would consider. Their ARs don’t have a very good reputation. They are most known for polymer ARs (upper and lower receiver) which are poor quality parts. I think their “Milsport” line, which is aluminum, may be a response to that perception, but looking at the website, they don’t list a complete AR in that line, just a lower receiver for a 9mm pistol caliber carbine. I own one of their polymer uppers (bought for a dedicated .22 project) and it is a very low quality product, even by the standards of polymer AR manufacturers, many of which are junk.
Honestly, there are far better choices. I would start with Palmetto State Armory. Either buy a complete rifle, or a complete upper and a complete lower; they snap together with two pins and assembly will not be a problem. You can easily find something in the same price range as ATI and it will be far higher quality.
Right now, they have a nitride upper with a rail, backup iron sights, and a nickel boron bolt carrier group (a significant upgrade) for $299, and a complete lower for $129. This combination is far better than anything ATI offers.

I recommend two very good basic rifles. 1. Ruger AR556, 2. S&W M&P15 Sport II. Both are very affordable and reliable and were made for shooters like you. I have the Ruger and my kids have the S&W.
