I am considering purchasing an AR15 .556:
American Tactical Imports Milsport 5.56mm Optics Ready Semi-Automatic Rifle with KeyMod Rail
Can y'all tell me if this is going to be a good decision?
Right after that LV shooting when the media was screaming about banning AR’s I went and bought a Ruger 556. Love shooting it, beautifully accurate.
Bought my AR-15 from a local home-based dealer, retired Air Force armorer, for under $600. Scope from Amazon, handle from dealer. Added a sling, soft case, and Plano All Weather Tactical Case (for airline travel). Picked up a Total investment Under $900.
Eagle-15, Model 15EA01, https://www.armalite.com/product/15ea01-eagle-arms/
Nikon P-223 BDC 600, Model 8497.
Ive never heard of this incident but it sounds like the police shot a bunch of people tried to blame it on others and are now desperately trying to cover it up.
The Feds frying many people at the Branch Davidian compound comes to mind as the most evil thing that happened around Waco.
I agree. Stag Arms makes some great AR-15’s
Unless you plan on going to war with it, Polymer uppers are just fine so long as the steel barrels are good.
Get the cheapest functional one you can find. You’ll lose less when the government gives them the New Zealand treatment.

“I dont know anything about guns but if I did know something about guns I would suggest getting a Colt model LE6920.”
And if I had one of those and loved shooting it I would recommend it as well.
I started off with a Troy upper (Complete) and mounted it on a Cross Machine Tools lower. Modified, added, subtracted and before I knew it I was a class 07 FFL making my own.
Be prepared to spend some money. If you don’t really know what you want quite yet, just pick up a Smith &Wesson from a gun show; they go for around 450.00 and will get you into the market so you can try and decide for yourself as you move along in this game.
As others have stated, take lessons. I’ve been a shooter for a very long time and I still do rifle and pistol lessons to this day. Its always good to get others professional input on things like how you are shooting.
What you really need is the Armat M41A Pulse Rifle chambered in 10mm.
The Colonial Marines swear by it.
Yes Daniel Defense definitely but Windham makes a sweet AR 15 for about $900.
ATI is among the last manufacturers I would consider. Their ARs don’t have a very good reputation. They are most known for polymer ARs (upper and lower receiver) which are poor quality parts. I think their “Milsport” line, which is aluminum, may be a response to that perception, but looking at the website, they don’t list a complete AR in that line, just a lower receiver for a 9mm pistol caliber carbine. I own one of their polymer uppers (bought for a dedicated .22 project) and it is a very low quality product, even by the standards of polymer AR manufacturers, many of which are junk.
Honestly, there are far better choices. I would start with Palmetto State Armory. Either buy a complete rifle, or a complete upper and a complete lower; they snap together with two pins and assembly will not be a problem. You can easily find something in the same price range as ATI and it will be far higher quality.
Right now, they have a nitride upper with a rail, backup iron sights, and a nickel boron bolt carrier group (a significant upgrade) for $299, and a complete lower for $129. This combination is far better than anything ATI offers.

We have two built by these folks:
Excellent work. Fine shooters and wicked accurate. Prices are fair and you can set it up any way you want to.
Good luck.

I recommend two very good basic rifles. 1. Ruger AR556, 2. S&W M&P15 Sport II. Both are very affordable and reliable and were made for shooters like you. I have the Ruger and my kids have the S&W.
AR15s have been described as "Lego for adults". :)
I will follow up me earlier reply with some additional advice.
1) Lots of folks here recommending brands. The great thing about AR is you don’t need to get stuck with big sticker prices by brands (like DD) as there are so many alternative that still meet spec for less.
2) If you want a safe queen, buy an expensive brand. But if you are going to shoot it, and use it like you need it, you have to not be afraid of it getting dirty or beat up, so don’t get something all prettied up and then be afraid to ding it.
3) Most AR builders will tell you the lower can be fairly inexpensive parts, and its best to put your dollars into good uppers (barrels, optics). Exception to this is triggers. A cheap sticky trigger on the lower sucks. Go at least with an enhanced trigger where its polished better, if not a good drop in trigger.
4) Too much furniture just weighs it down. Stay simple and light.
5) If you are shooting inside 100 yards, you don’t need expensive barrels, sights, etc. If you are looking for precision shooting beyond 100 yards, you want to pay more (dollars and attention) to barrels and glass. But as I stated in my original post, you can always change or build uppers for specific purposes later.
6) Don’t misinterpret the above remark to mean inside 100 yards cheap is ok. You may like the price of a $30 optic but if it craps out at the range, you will be thinking why didn’t I pay more up front to get something not made in China in a toy factory. Buy quality, and if you cant afford it now, wait and save. That’s better than buying twice and spending more than you would have if you skipped the cheap sale item.
Have fun with this. Diving into the AR world is almost like having a baby! Loads of joy.
I have built over 20 of them in various calibers, colors and furniture combinations.
The one common theme is the PCR-80. I did them all myself. The early ones are not a good as the later ones (IMHO) but they are all fully functional and almost indistinguishable from one I purchased on Form 4473.
