"The Twilight Zone," then and now
YouTube ^ | March 31, 2019 | CBS Sunday Morning

Posted on 03/31/2019 2:19:57 PM PDT by EveningStar

In 1959 Rod Serling's TV series, "The Twilight Zone," made its debut on CBS. Though not a major success at the time, the show that served up horror and science fiction stories as winking tales of contemporary society has taken on legendary status, influencing films and TV ever since. David Pogue looks at how Serling crafted a TV classic with New York Times television critic James Poniewozik, and talks with the writer's daughter, Jodi Serling, about the influence that his hometown, Binghamton, N.Y., had on Serling's allegorical tales. Pogue also talks with Jordan Peele, the writer-comedian behind the Oscar-winning "Get Out" and "Us," who this week introduces a new iteration of "The Twilight Zone," debuting on CBS All Access.

I did not even know there was a remake; I would have assumed it was fodder for propaganda about bigots othering aliens.

I enjoyed the original series: modest effects, but good acting, and sometimes good scripting.

Same with Science Fiction. I used to look forward to the “Best Of” compilations of each year but the last decade’s have been SJW crap poorly written. Paging Martin Greenberg (perhaps the greatest editor of all time), cleanup on Aisle 3.

Oh, so you missed the Roswell Gay Storyline that followed.

Not kidding, it really happened. I tried to stomach all the Illegal Invader stuff, Humans and otherwise, but when they went there I was done.

Roswell gay story-line? Someone needs to be wished to the cornfield. “Bad. Very bad!”

I should have bailed when the pro Illegal stuff started in the first Episode.

I had it DVR’d so I didn’t waste as much of my Life as I could have without fast forward.

Don’t despair or give up. The guy has talent displayed in the film “Get Out” and the Key & Peele Show is more hits than misses. If I didn’t give everyone a chance I’d be a hermit.

This has been tried as a movie and now the 3rd series reboot. They problem is that there is no Serling, no Charles Beaumont, no George Clayton Johnson. These were people that could write characters and plot. Not to wish I’ll will, but it’s not going to succeed. Getting sick of the remakes. Time for these lazy assholes to actually think up something original instead of going for the quick buck.

I was referencing the Roswell Show, not the new Twilight Zone.

If the new Twilight Show was on regular TV rather than behind a Paywall on the CBS App, I would give it a look.

Serling had a really hard time keep sponsors. Budget got cut drastically after the first season. Came in as a mid season replacement for season 4 (couldn’t find a sponsor on time to start in September). And needed co-sponsorship in the 5th and final season. So, actually it wasn’t that successful.

Wow.

They were so good though!

But I’ve seen some very good series disappear though the decades.

While garbage runs for 20 years.

TV isn’t about quality, it’s about selling ads. TZ’s ratings were always in that “OK but not what we were hoping for” zone. It’s funny to think now because it’s probably the most influential show in American culture (more so now that the anthology series has become almost necessary to be a “serious” network). But at the time it was a middling success getting OK reviews. It’s the great episodes, plus of course that theme song and the strong imagery, that built the legend.

Very true, all of it.

Same with Star Trek :)

Though it didn’t last NEAR 6 seasons.

Star Trek didn’t exactly kill it in the ratings, neither when it ran originally.
