Harry Reid testifies exercise device injury cost him Senate
Associated Press ^ | March 28, 2019 | Ken Ritter

Former U.S. Sen. Harry Reid told a Nevada jury Thursday that his career was cut short by injuries he suffered when a TheraBand exercise device slipped from his hand and he fell in his home bathroom in 2015.

From a wheelchair on the witness stand in a product liability lawsuit against Ohio-based device maker Hygenic Corp., the 79-year-old longtime Democratic leader covered half his face with his hand to indicate the bones he said were “smashed” when he spun around and fell against cabinets in his bathroom.

Despite surgeries, he said he has irreparable retina damage and can only distinguish light from dark in one eye.

“I hurt myself really bad,” he said. “I spun around. I can’t tell you more specifically. I hit the counter.”

Reid is suing the TheraBand maker for unspecified monetary damages, claiming civil negligence and failure to warn the public the elastic physical resistance band was “unreasonably dangerous,” particularly for the elderly like him. He is due to resume testimony on Friday. …

I'm guessing that it's this device:

Seemingly safer than dumbbells, but apparently not as safe as you'd think. I understand the rationale behind something like this - no weight plates or dumbbells to trip over or fall on your toes/head. The danger comes from when the user tries too hard and gets pulled by the bungee cord instead of pulling it. Something similar can happen with free weights, but the bungee cord effect, where resistance increases rather than stays constant throughout the full range of motion, might be harder to control. Seems to me he'd have been better off with a weight machine. They're certainly way cheaper than the Theraband.

I thought he was dead. Imagine that he’s still around. The stench of sulfur was in that room...

Which is why any physical therapist would recommend a person sit down when using these bands if the person is unstable on their feet.

The article said he was doing some sort of rowing exercise, which would imply he was sitting in some fashion. The article doesn't say, but I suspect he was sitting on a chair or stool. It would be hard to fall when your rear end is on the floor.

You don’t really think little “Pinky” would ever admit to getting his ass kicked, now do you?

Will Harry’s friend testify that Harry’s a born liar? No one knows Harry better than his friend who has helped Harry through out Harry’s career.

It always had to be that the people who filed the lawsuits that led to ridiculous warnings had no shame.

This is just an example of that.

“Exercise Device” sure is a funny name for a gangster.

I liked it better when the gangsters’ names were thing like “Jonny the knife” or “Mr. Cleanface” or even “Mr Gillette”.

A little more information on the case. From the article:

“Worse still, it seems Reid threw the band out after the incident, meaning that no one involved in the lawsuit has the exact item Reid was using, and it’s not immediately clear that the product was an actual TheraBand manufactured or sold by Hygenic.”

79 years old. Partially blind. In a wheelchair.

Only thing better would be to hear he and John McCain were going to be sharing the same one room apartment.

Should have done it in the hall way.
