Dick Dale, known as King of The Surf Guitar, has passed away, sources said on Sunday.
Dale, who had been quietly suffering health issues for many years, was considered a leader in the surf guitar genre. Dale was 82.
Born Richard Anthony Monsour, his famous songs, like Miserlou, and many others have become part of the American music fabric.

RIP, God speed
Miserlou became part of the American music fabric.
Must be a small invisible thread in the fabric, maybe in the inner liner.
I feel awful. I love Dick Dale.
...lots of fantastic music and I remember every single one of them when they were popular.
Some people are just naturals at it, sounds like your dad was. I am not, I like natural talent and it’s a struggle but I keep trying. Worth it because for me it’s just for fun and the challenge of doing something I’m not necessarily good at but making myself a tiny bit better every day.
As a guitar player, he’s an inspiration to me.
I’ve got “Ghost Riders in the Sky” by 10 artists...Mr. Dale isn’t going to be #11.
Now that is GOOD! Thanks for the link. I just bought it on Apple iTunes Store.
I just listened to The Ventures “Pipeline” which I always liked, then Dick Dale. Wow, no comparison. The Ventures cover seems labored and too technical compared to the free flowing and wild Dick Dale cover.
“Hes left handed and he plays a left handed guitar. But he strings the strings backwards, bass on the bottom and treble on top. Its like he learned to play by using a right handed guitar flipped to the left but didnt bother to restring it in reverse like Jimi Hendrix did.”
Check out Albert King. He did the same thing, as do I. I think Doyle Bramhall II, Bobby Womack and Bob Geldof played lefty with righty strings as well. I know Jimi Hendrix learned to play that way but switched over to standard strings before he got famous.
Back when Rap was coming up out of the cellar the Letters to the Editor section of Keyboard magazine was a war zone, with half of them yammering about creative genius and the other half screaming that it wasn’t even music.
One guy wrote in that it didn’t matter ‘cause white folks had already Had Rap for Ages. They called it Square Dancing.
I still liken rap more to the natives in darkest Africa beating on logs and yelping around the fire.
Randy Nauert of The Challengers passed away last month . He lost his home and all his animals who were in his Zen Zoo on his property in Malibu during the recent fire . https://shacc.org/2019/02/09/rip-randy-nauert/
So to you I shall put an end
And you'll never hear surf music again ...
[At half-speed] That sounds like a lie to me
Come on man, let's go home
...was alleged by Dick Dale to have been Hendrix's way of encouraging his recuperation when Dale was seriously ill. RIP.
RIP, Mr. Dale. You’re in the ultimate big band now, sir. And my little band has Pipeline in our set list. We play it at every gig.
Some of the best musicians I ever played with can’t read a lick. Many of us learn by having it passed down to us (lore).
Fortunate enough to see Mr. Dale play once with Brian Setzer..good stuff.
Don’t forget the Tornados or Duane Eddie.
Pretty cool dude. Hang ten and rest easy.
