Samsung [announced] that it was no longer making 4K players and has confirmed that it will also halt production on new 1080p models. "Samsung will no longer introduce new Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray player models in the US market," a Samsung spokesperson told CNET. Samsung launched its last 4K players in 2017 and didn't add any new models to its lineup in 2018. A high-end 4K player for 2019 along the lines of its UBD-M9500 was in the works, a Forbes report says, but has now been scrapped...

I never fell into the overpriced Blueray scam. The quality of DVDs is just fine. It was blown out of proportion and it costs them no more to make a blueray disk than it does a DVD. It was all just hype to hyper-inflate the price.
And I think you are right... They should have just went to SD card format a longtime ago. The player can be the size of a cigarette pack with no moving mechanical parts to wear out and a whole library of hundreds of movies can be stored in one shoebox.
I have a 4K TV and 4K blue ray player. The only disk I have in 4K is Rogue Squadron. Holy cow that is amazing. Of course I also have surround sound and watching that on my system is better than in the theater.

Don't be a Luddite. I have no problem with renting a movie off of Google Play for $3.99. It is far cheaper than going to the theaters, and I'm not paying $39.99 or whatever for a disc that will deteriorate over time and just take up space.
I just bought “Kick Ass” with a 3 disk set. One Blu-Ray, one DVD and one for the computer. The set was accurately described as used but like new.
Paid $3 plus I think, $2 shipping from Amazon.

There’s a massive difference between high def and standard def on a calibrated display. Depth, contrast, detail, it’s all there.
Sadly most people have no idea that high definition displays need to be calibrated. Most people leave their sets on the torch mode they used to select the set in the first place. The best displays are NEVER shown in toirch mode.
Torch mode is the most “vivid” setting with contrast set to maximum.
“brightness” is a black level setting, “contrast” is a white level setting.
The general public couldn’t learn it and that’s the death of high definition.
I think a flash drive would hold more bytes than an SD card. But if they can put films and TV series on flash drives or even on SD cards, I would start a collection immediately.
On a screen as small as 40" (which will do me for a while) there's an obvious improvement in picture quality between BluRay and DVD -- when the effin' BluRay disk will play on the player. The BluRay "standard" is a bucket of vipers.
The problem is, BluRay was inferior to HD-DVD, but BluRay won the format war because of decisions made at a couple of studios.
The coming problem is, 4K TV is starting to arrive, and by the time we're shopping for Christmas 2019, 4K TVs (which are obviously going to be very large screens, otherwise the eye isn't impressed) are going to be below $500-$600 and 8K TV is breathing down everyone's necks. Digital distribution of new release movies to theaters hasn't caught on, which is difficult to understand. Probably has something to do with the Mob activity that governs so much of the entertainment industry machinery.
Optical formats will remain available, of course, probably for some years (the last VHS maker stopped making recording decks a mere two years ago; players are still available, not sure whether they're being made), but solid state digital (both streamed and on media) are going to, quite simply, destroy the market for optical media. A visit to Walmart, with its bins of movies and CDs under $10 (mostly $5 and under) should convince most people.
Don't know about their DVD players but as long as they focus on their TV's, they should stay at the top of the market......
I've noticed the same thing only I get my movies from the local library..........New releases just take time but they are eventually there......
May be our internet connection, but I do not watch as much TV as she does so I do not want a higher prices connection for movies.
I've been thinking about getting the capability to digitally record streams (including, for that matter, broadcast TV; digital "vcrs" for that are about $50). Right now my archiving consists of using a website where I can just enter the URL (works on YT, Vimeo I think, FB, others) and the video gets saved for download for a few hours. That's handy for clipping songs as well.

I can probably do without 4k TV and live through it. lol They do have HD Media Players that will hook to anything even old RCA red/white/yellow inputs that stream, play SD cards, and USB sticks.
But you know what the problem with all this mess is? The fact that it is illegal to copy anything, even just for your own use. This should be legal so you can copy all your old stuff onto SD or USB for your own personal use. This way all the VHS, DVD, Blueray stuff you have already invested in can be reused.

Same here... We have been living the off grid RV lifestyle for about 10 years now and most of the time we are very remote. DVDs are mandatory. lol
