Samsung [announced] that it was no longer making 4K players and has confirmed that it will also halt production on new 1080p models. "Samsung will no longer introduce new Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray player models in the US market," a Samsung spokesperson told CNET.  Samsung launched its last 4K players in 2017 and didn't add any new models to its lineup in 2018. A high-end 4K player for 2019 along the lines of its UBD-M9500 was in the works, a Forbes report says, but has now been scrapped...

Why would we want to watch the crap being produced by Hollywood? You don’t need a 4K player to watch the older movies. 8>)

This is Bad news. The only way to see what real 4K looks like is with a HD-DVD player. Streamed 4K is very compressed and the sound is not even close to a physical disk. Sony could have saved the day but they did not put a HD-DVD player in the PS4 Pro. When Sony put a Blu Ray in the PS 3 it established the tech. Sony pretty much killed HD-DVD in the crib. Many will never know just how good 4K movies can look and sound. This sucks. Again quality is scarified over convenience and distribution costs.

Horse and buggy whips are still in demand....

Seriously, why would I want to own a CD or DVD?

I like having a hard copy. I stream most entertainment but a solid copy is good too.

A lot of what I have is out of print hence a CD or DVD.

My 4k consists of bits of stock footage I send up.

I think one has sold as a 4k. Others have at lower resolutions.

It’s a hobby.

It is nice to be able to own a physical copy so you don't have to rely on your Internet connection. Ask those who lost media on Plays-for-Sure and iTunes how that worked out.

Bad news indeed. Audio is an least as important to me as video— and that part of my setup dwarfs what I spent on my display. Physical media is needed because there just isn’t room in the pipe for audio in a stream. 4K video showed such promise and the demo discs I have are eye candy. But, just like the tease that was SACD, there isn’t enough content or interest.

“the 4K market doesn’t exist yet.“

Sadly now on the disk side it never will. Sony really screwed any chance when they left it off the PS4 Pro. The XBOX does have it but for it to any chance Sony needed to help. “Good enough” will win the day. For those who say big deal who wants disks anyways if you every saw the difference on a TV or projector capable of seeing it you would know. Plus to stream 4k you need consistanlty big pipe and you better have a high data cap and it will look almost as good as 1080 on Blu Ray but with mediocre at best audio.

Because Of rather have the option to watch an enjoyable show as often as I want, instead of paying $3 or $4 each time I watch it, as well as paying for that bandwidth.

I don’t really know what 4K is except it is supposed to be better quality than 1080dpi and that is all it takes for many who are buying a new device.

I have noticed some real bargains on regular TVs lately. Three days ago I noticed a 43 inch 1080 TV at Walmart for $95.

I recently purchased a movie which included 3 different disks. One in Blu Ray, one in DVD and another for computer which I haven’t figured out yet.

At most distances on a 1080dpi TV, I can’t tell the DVD from the Bluray. If the screen is close I barely can tell. I imagine the same will be true of 4K.

Years ago, a VP at Sony stated that BluRay would be the last optical format. I suspect the next prerecorded media format (if there is one) will be simlar to SD cards.

Blu Ray is certainly not going away immediately. Sony, LG & other manufacturers are still making the players, and the movie studios will keep churning out the discs as long as people buy 'em. As Obama might say, if you like your Blu Ray, you can keep your Blu Ray.

There is definitely a trend toward streaming, though. I was never much of a buyer of DVDs or Blu Rays, so I don't personally care. On the other hand, I do understand why some would prefer a physical disc to a download. For one thing, discs typically have bonus content, featurettes, deleted scenes, commentary, etc., that you almost never get with a download. Also, at this point, audio video/quality may still be better with a physical disc compared to some streaming material.
