Eating 'ultraprocessed' foods accelerates your risk of early death, study says
CNN ^ | February 11, 2019 | Susan Scutti

The quick and easy noshes you love are chipping away at your mortality one nibble at a time, according to new research from France: We face a 14% higher risk of early death with each 10% increase in the amount of ultraprocessed foods we eat.

"Ultraprocessed foods are manufactured industrially from multiple ingredients that usually include additives used for technological and/or cosmetic purposes," wrote the authors of the study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. "Ultraprocessed foods are mostly consumed in the form of snacks, desserts, or ready-to-eat or -heat meals," and their consumption "has largely increased during the past several decades."

This trend may drive an increase of early deaths due to chronic illnesses, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, they say.

Of course other countries have a longer life span

The US has a large invader community with poor health and poorer life habits.

Also different countries count deaths differently.

I read once that if the stats for the black and brown population were eliminated, the US would statistically look like Scandinavian countries or the Netherlands. Especially in relationship to violence.

Had an uncle who exercised, ate all the correct foods, didn’t smoke or drink or have any other unhealthy activities. He died of nothing.

I recall a bumper sticker from back in the day...Eat right, Exercise daily, Die anyway!

For some reason a line from the cheesy 1985 movie “Remo Williams: the Adventure Begins” comes to mind. The sage old oriental character in there says something like “You know why they call it fast food? Because it hastens your journey to the grave.”

I had a fried who was very health-conscious regarding what she ate. She ate mostly organic, little in the way of fast food, junk, or convenience foods. She didn’t smoke nor do drugs; she drank very little alcohol

She did not make it to 65 years old; she died of cancer.

You are showing off your critical thinking skills. How do you like being at the top of the intellectual pyramid in America?

I read some legitimate medical research that stated two-thirds of your risk for disease and ill-health is genetically determined, and out of your hands. 1/3 is determined by the environment and your lifestyle. I think this is pretty accurate.

Meat or grain products grown in Michigan are very POOR in Selenium. It is an ESSENTIAL Trace Mineral your body needs.

Processed foods contain preservatives, which are basically poisons used to kill bacteria.

No, they are not poisons when used in food. Preservatives are added to foods to prevent or slow spoilage due to bacteria, molds, fungi or yeast. They also help prevent rancidity where free radicals can form. These are not poisons because poison, as it has always been, is determined by the dose. The only difference between medicine and poison is the dosage.

The fact is, artificial preservatives like sodium nitrate and sodium benzoate are used in food preparation because they are effective in small amounts. Salt and alcohol are also used as preservatives. Is salt a poison? Try living a few months without it. The nitrates used as preservatives in food are not poison. Most of the nitrates you consume every day come naturally from the vegetables you eat.

The internet (and CNN) are absolutely the worst places to learn about anything to do with human nutrition.

Thanks for the compliment. These stories come out, and beg many questions which they don’t seem to want to deal with.

I don’t know where I fit in the intellectual pyramid, but like to think I have common sense.

IF you have or buy any cast iron pans, pure lard is the ONLY thing that will season cast iron properly.

It also makes the very best piecrust from scratch. Remember your Grandma’s pie crust? She made it with lard.

As I say to my wife, if (and I am) in the intellectual top 10%, what does that say about how dumb the other 90% is?

IOW, if I am one of the brightest, we are in deep doo doo. LOL

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.

Sounds to me like you have an active lifestyle. My observation based on my own body is keeping active is key to a disease resistant life. I don’t work out in gym, I am too old for that nearing 79. The treadmill gives me access to fast-walking in all weather conditions. Time is more important than speed of walking. I am not even tired after 30 min on treadmill and could easily go for 60 min. But why strain my knees and hip joints any more when 30 min keeps me out of the doctor’s office. Same with lifting weights. I lift only 30 pounds but do about 100 lifts. That way I won’t break anything.
As for diet, it does not matter much if you are active. Just make sure your bowel activity is normal and regular. Keep in mind our ancestors for a few million years ate whatever was available. Our bodies are amazingly tolerant of variety of foods. Only caution is if you are not very active, modern American typical diet will cause lot of problems.
I don’t see many people over 70 in the gym. No wonder the older people in my condo complex of 300units look out of shape, walk slowly, and need doctor visits frequently.
