VANITY ---- Lets talk bug out bags ----
FR: VANITY ^ | 2/2/2019 | Me

What is in your bug out bag? Curious what others carry. I am in the north east so my needs / choices will probably be different than a southerner depending on season. My primary bag is what I take to work. It is intended to get me home if I have to go on hoof. Couple MRE's, stainless utensils, change of socks (x2), pair of worn in running shoes (outside bag; loose in car), three 1quart canteens hanging off the bag, 3 quart internal to the bag with "straw"; water purifiers, upgraded medical (field sutures, bandages, pressure bandages, etc); stop the bleed kit, peroxide, assortment of self adhesive bandages (think bandages with neosporin that latch on), some trash bags (keep gear dry; just in case), strike anywhere matches, couple bic lighters, small set of scissors, 3 inch knife, K-Bar, Legal short barreled shotgun in scabbard, 25 round satchel of 3 inch assorted shotgun shells; 50 ft of parachute cord; 50 zip ties and last but not least, "ranger roll" and an iso mat.

Re-reading your situation, you are beyond a bug-out “bag”. You are talking of a bug-out system! One that requires vehicle, stores, ammo, guns, etc. IMHO, given the volume of stuff you need, you should identify a location now where you can run to your bug-out stuff, such as other like-minded people who will stay in-place. Another option is to rent a storage unit, store your bug-out stuff there, and for a catastrophic nationwide event, head to that place and hunker down with all your in-place stuff until you can decide how to proceed under ever-changing chaotic conditions. You have a built-in fence, and some security. Perhaps even better, is to get others to do the same thing and rent contiguous units, or a block of units. Just a thought.

Thanks for the post.

I prefer GHB over BOB. Your going home to either your established residence or retreat.

I have a lightweight system developed from experience backpacking years ago.

If you can comfortably backpack with the system, then it is no different than a GHB. Some items such as coms I go heavier on. I also include tools in my vehicle for emergency repairs.

My latest addition is a silky saw. This is appropriate as you stated for local geography. I keep water in the car, however this is not really an option for GHB carry due to weight. I have a pack bladder and a ceramic filter system to go with the backpack.

I also have conceal carry for those that think they can get anything by conceal carry alone. Further, I embrace the grey man philosophy. If you are carrying a battle rifle immediately after and event, you have drawn unnecessary attention to yourself.

The main addition I’d make is a portable water purifier, and in my case, HF communications gear and associated antenna and power source. But anyone should carry a portable shortwave radio and a pair of GMRS walkie talkies for local area comma.

Agreed with everything you posted.

Mine’s more for car trouble in the woods than an actual bug-out bag.

I use a Benelli range bag.

Maps, maps, maps.

Paracord, zip ties, duct tape.

Sewing kit, suture kit.

Boning scissors, foldable saw, knife.

Fleece blanket.

Fire starting kit, metal pot.

Rehydration salts.

Assorted pills, bandages, splint, trauma pak.

Iodine pills, hand sanitizer.

Super glue, WD-40.

Hot sauce (when you need it, it’s an emergency, ok?).

Hat and gloves.

Road flares.

Roll of toilet paper.

IMHO What you have is a glorified get home bag. A true bug out bag is much more complex and detailed. There is tons on the net about the differences. If you are in an urban environment you really need to study and practice being a grey man. In VN we used to call it going white.

“Survival kit contents check. In them you’ll find:

- One forty-five caliber automatic
- Two boxes of ammunition
- Four days’ concentrated emergency rations
- One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine,
vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills
- One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible
- One hundred dollars in rubles
- One hundred dollars in gold
- Nine packs of chewing gum
- One issue of prophylactics
- Three lipsticks
- Three pair of nylon stockings.

Shoot, a fella’ could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.”

“How long do the protein bars “keep”? “

We put some of the bars in bug-out bags a few years ago. A couple years later, we were doing maintenance, and they had turned to disgusting dust. Maybe double wrapped (Ziploc) or something would be an option.

Food for thought, establish a meeting point at a certain time, maybe 2 or 2 places. AKA a rally point. Maybe you and her can meet halfway so you both won’t have to walk too far and wait long to re unite.
Make sure her route is secure so as to minimize danger to her.

My 2 cents.

“Don’t forget a roll of toilet paper.”

Heard it’s a good idea to keep TP in an old coffee can. But is there room in the bag for a coffee can?

Gotta recommend the stove also as Eagles6 says. But I have a solid fuel tab so less liquid to slosh around. And I say have a metal canteen to help melt snow and ice for water as that is one of your big concerns.

We have a radio in both cars. Small, by Eton, that you crank to charge. Can also charge cell phones, and picks up NOAA weather alerts besides regular AM/FM.

“Socks in sandwich bags.”

I’ve been traveling on motorcycles most of my life. I keep all sorts of stuff in zip lock bags, especially clothing. After seeing the large storage bags for sale that use a vacuum cleaner I ran tubing to the vacuum ports on my engine and put a small ball valve inline. I can put something like long underwear in a freezer bag with the motor idling and suck the air out and compact them considerably. This will work with almost any engine.

I could talk on the topic for HOURS. I’m from the NE too, although I’m moving.

My best bug-out bag was.. is... my truck. I gave up on backpacks. I’ve had about 100 and they were “one size fits all” type of stuff. I can talk about this for about 2 hours.

You have to increase your skillset. Every new talent you learn is about a pound of preps you can drop off. Before you know it your “Bug out bag” will be your knife sheath.

Every bag should be filled with practice and skills, not brands and toys. I’ve seen guys do more with a fire tin than some guys can do with a hotel room.

The water thing though... Carry water. Don’t think it’ll freeze. If it freezes in your bag, then it’s freezing on the ground too.

I split my gear into 4 levels.
4 = The house. Generator, fuel, food buckets, etc
3 = The truck. tarps, tools and recovery equipment. I can take some stuff from 3 and put it into 2.
2 = A duffel bag filled with EVERYTHING. The idea here is that if traffic suddenly stops, and I need to head into the woods I’m not dividing up my stuff there on the road near all the morons. I’m taking -everything- into the woods and then lightening the load. Hide stuff. So in my duffel is my 1.
1 = A small bag that’s in my big bag. I use this to look more ill-prepared (So that I look less tempting to steal from) and I use this bag as a grey man thing. I can stow my duffel secure and take stupid stuff with me into town, towards the highway, or out on the hunt.

So for me it’s all about the hierarchy of stuff.
