I prefer GHB over BOB. Your going home to either your established residence or retreat.
I have a lightweight system developed from experience backpacking years ago.
If you can comfortably backpack with the system, then it is no different than a GHB. Some items such as coms I go heavier on. I also include tools in my vehicle for emergency repairs.
My latest addition is a silky saw. This is appropriate as you stated for local geography. I keep water in the car, however this is not really an option for GHB carry due to weight. I have a pack bladder and a ceramic filter system to go with the backpack.
I also have conceal carry for those that think they can get anything by conceal carry alone. Further, I embrace the grey man philosophy. If you are carrying a battle rifle immediately after and event, you have drawn unnecessary attention to yourself.
