VANITY ---- Lets talk bug out bags ----
FR: VANITY ^ | 2/2/2019 | Me

Posted on 02/02/2019 1:55:21 PM PST by afterhoursarmory

What is in your bug out bag? Curious what others carry. I am in the north east so my needs / choices will probably be different than a southerner depending on season. My primary bag is what I take to work. It is intended to get me home if I have to go on hoof. Couple MRE's, stainless utensils, change of socks (x2), pair of worn in running shoes (outside bag; loose in car), three 1quart canteens hanging off the bag, 3 quart internal to the bag with "straw"; water purifiers, upgraded medical (field sutures, bandages, pressure bandages, etc); stop the bleed kit, peroxide, assortment of self adhesive bandages (think bandages with neosporin that latch on), some trash bags (keep gear dry; just in case), strike anywhere matches, couple bic lighters, small set of scissors, 3 inch knife, K-Bar, Legal short barreled shotgun in scabbard, 25 round satchel of 3 inch assorted shotgun shells; 50 ft of parachute cord; 50 zip ties and last but not least, "ranger roll" and an iso mat.

For all you folk looking to bug out, just remember...the place you’re buggin’ out TO may not take too kindly to your arrival.

If it’s a SHTF scenario, I sure as hell won’t be welcoming ANY strangers with a smile and a “Howdy do.” Doubt I’m alone in that thinking.

I hope you have a good dog. Another good item/investment I didn’t list is a textbook: “Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine”. Every couple of years a new edition appears so older ones (6yo) can be good buying. Priceless info in there - 500 years of accumulated knowledge. And its very helpful if there is someone like a nurse or med student comes along. Providence can surprise!

After SHTF there will be “safety in numbers” re-distributive street gangs knocking at doors.... maybe they will have good intentions and ask for “your share of protection tax” or whatever.

As urban survivor gangs get bigger they naturally get more ruthless: the Alpha males sort themselves out by trying to appear to be the best provider. Next, spies and snitches will turn in dissenters and hoarders for Brownie points with their Alpha. (Sounds like all socialist revolutions). Nothing new under the sun.

Whatever. I’m VERY rural, so street gangs mean nothing to me.
If I live long enough for them to reach here, I’ll make my stand.

Sounds good. While I'm here.... 90 seconds of video of '50's Americana from the Smithsonian:

Yes.

I have a US military surplus canteen (plastic) which nests in a steel canteen cup which in turn nests in an aluminum solid fuel stove that uses trioxane solid fuel tabs though any work.

I remember the closing scene of Outlaw Josey Wales had MAD treaty with the locals, Mr Eastwood assured the Chief they would either live or die together.

With Nevada, in the main, the detonations went ahead only when the wind direction was right. Later the tests were underground. And nothing like North Korea’s methods.

Local knowledge when SHTF is always a good thing, and that includes the wind pattern. I experienced a toxic industrial fire a few years ago. It was about breakfast and the newspeople on the radio were whipping up panic -there were sirens everywhere and traffic jams... but I went outside and behold, as usual, a bright and still morning... the breeze usually develops after 11am when the air gets warmer. So there was no need to panic, the smoke was going to stay pretty much where it was.

Also, a small Geiger gauge can be a good thing to have.

Just remember that if making a move is a good idea to you, other will usually have the exact same idea. Prepare accordingly.

I also keep a small backpack stove, single burner, stainless steel cup, and a couple freeze dried meals in another bag. MREs are obligatory, but a nice hot meal really boosts morale.

The shotgun is easier for me to secure in my vehicle against a break in (I already have ways of securing both pistol and a shotgun in my current vehicle). Pistol is usually on me 24x7. I am trying to figure out how I can secure one of my custom AR builds as I would be more comfortable having that scoped and keeping a sidearm and shotgun in case I need to go inside a dwelling.

I’m just game playing here with you all and getting a LOT of good input.

I thought maybe you had made up the Amazon URL for that knife.
The Q&A and the reviews for it are hilarious. :)

Compass, map, small LED flashlight. Socks in sandwich bags.

Own all, now checking into the bag. Good catch. Thank you.

We’re rural and agree our home is our bug out. There’s fish and wildlife. The pantry is full. Probably much saver to stay put.

I recall those handles, sinkspur more, but not their antics. Since were bribing up screen names, I do recall Willie Green (train dude if memory serves me correctly) and Chet99 (pit bull defender extraordinaire). Those threads always got fun.

And of course the “Great Flame Wars of Free Republic” of years past (GWB years) that would have half the board banned today overnight today.

/good times.

Chet99 was anything but a pitbull defender.
