VANITY ---- Lets talk bug out bags ----
FR: VANITY ^ | 2/2/2019 | Me

What is in your bug out bag? Curious what others carry. I am in the north east so my needs / choices will probably be different than a southerner depending on season. My primary bag is what I take to work. It is intended to get me home if I have to go on hoof. Couple MRE's, stainless utensils, change of socks (x2), pair of worn in running shoes (outside bag; loose in car), three 1quart canteens hanging off the bag, 3 quart internal to the bag with "straw"; water purifiers, upgraded medical (field sutures, bandages, pressure bandages, etc); stop the bleed kit, peroxide, assortment of self adhesive bandages (think bandages with neosporin that latch on), some trash bags (keep gear dry; just in case), strike anywhere matches, couple bic lighters, small set of scissors, 3 inch knife, K-Bar, Legal short barreled shotgun in scabbard, 25 round satchel of 3 inch assorted shotgun shells; 50 ft of parachute cord; 50 zip ties and last but not least, "ranger roll" and an iso mat.

Just wanted to get a Saturday afternoon thread going on being prepared with a bug out bag. My primary bag I carry in my car in the event I have to hoof it home and if I encounter problems along the way. I didn't list everything; but I am very interested in hearing what you carry and welcome constructive criticism of my setup. Lets talk and make our gear better.

Here is my first problem.
I can’t carry water (i.e., canteens always filled) in the winter due to being in the northeast and sub-zero temps. I guess I could less than fill my canteens so they don’t rupture; but I am relying on my water purification and the abundance of rivers streams in my locale. If I am at my place of business when SHTF, I can top off. Anyone have an idea about that?

I put one together around 25 years ago.

It is still sitting where I left it. Probably need to raid it for useful items as I am too old to bug out and it probably never was a real option.

If you live in a rural area like I do, you house is probably your best refuge.

I hear ya about the home being the refuge.
I am working this bag to do just that; get me home.
I work close to a fairly large city but live where the EBT types probably won’t make it out once the city is dried up.
Just trying to plan if the road ways are jammed up and I get do a force march to my abode...

How long do the protein bars “keep”? I’ve been looking at them (no, not the connivance store ones either); something more GNC based? (Or is there a difference?)

Good for you. I loathe those folks who go around pointing out how recent they joined. It shows a level of shallowness that is deep and wide. Not to mention arrogance.

Not to be cute but as long as you have a gun you can get everything else you need/want on the fly...if you get my drift. Just be careful not to run into anybody else with a gun!

A couple of changes of clothes and shoes. Three season stuff but also an old Carhartt coat with knit cap and a couple of pair of gloves.

An old pair of glasses, my previous prescription.

A bag of (stale) dog food so my dogs won't have to go hungry.

Various brands of power bars and stuff.

Oh yeah some money... I forget how much, I think I might have raided it to buy beer sometime or another.

And just my everyday carry gear bag that also has some stuff in it. Dental floss, etc.

My home here in the holler IS my bug out bag.

I’m not running anywhere. Unlike one famous FReeper, I have not built an ark to sail off in when the SHTF.

Will just stay put and do whatever the situation calls for.

LOL.. Oh, I hear ya; I do.
Its all about getting home though; for me anyway.
Home is where the real “toys” are. ;)

After reaching home; whole different ball game (defending it and keeping what is ours)
