What is in your bug out bag? Curious what others carry. I am in the north east so my needs / choices will probably be different than a southerner depending on season. My primary bag is what I take to work. It is intended to get me home if I have to go on hoof. Couple MRE's, stainless utensils, change of socks (x2), pair of worn in running shoes (outside bag; loose in car), three 1quart canteens hanging off the bag, 3 quart internal to the bag with "straw"; water purifiers, upgraded medical (field sutures, bandages, pressure bandages, etc); stop the bleed kit, peroxide, assortment of self adhesive bandages (think bandages with neosporin that latch on), some trash bags (keep gear dry; just in case), strike anywhere matches, couple bic lighters, small set of scissors, 3 inch knife, K-Bar, Legal short barreled shotgun in scabbard, 25 round satchel of 3 inch assorted shotgun shells; 50 ft of parachute cord; 50 zip ties and last but not least, "ranger roll" and an iso mat.
I’ve backpacked for years, and still hike a lot; I have no misconceptions about weight. They are heavier/bulkier, but those $1 “emergency ponchos” aren’t durable at all in brush - and some come in colors that make you REALLY stand out (which makes them handy for a glove box - if you’re changing a tire on a rainy night you want to be visible). Also, the cord inside lets you fit it better.
They fit well in the Molle II waist pack, which attaches perfectly to the bottom of the Molle II assault pack - which is an ideal bug-out bag.
Just my $.02; there is no “one-size-fits-all” bug-out bag due to each person’s particular area/circumstances.
I keep Bengal ant and roach spray in mine.
I never recommended a $1 poncho for you or others. Better to don a big trash bag than one of those.
Full disosure- a box of heavy duty plastic landscape bags stays in my truck.
In the end your BOB will fit your chosen scenarios.
Mine is a 3-day bag for all (GA) weather and 100 mile hunting boots.
I also have other items legally carried ;-)
I think he is thinking more of a get home bag than bug out.
I personally have no intent to head to the hills. Home is the goal.
If I am in downtown ATL, that’s a 3 day walk, vigorous, to get home. Once home very different circumstances and assets come into play.
But I gotta get home.
Thus my kit reflects that scenario. All others are easier.
My bad; you didn’t recommend the $1 ponchos.
Those garbage bags - great! Fill them with leaves and you have a mattress; cut some eyeholes, you have a dark green/black poncho (with a weird Klan-hood point at the top). A ready-made bivy sack, or the really thick ones serve well to save the floor of a tent...
You forgot the spell’n ;)
Thanks.
That’s a very nice adaptation. Cool.
As a test, take a 3 mile hike around your neighborhood wearing your backpack with weights in it equal to your total load out.
This prepper article and post got by me, but many of the comments
provoke some thought to basic equipment and the seasonal adjustments.
Take what you can use,.. and leave the rest.
Most of the comments demonstrate real considerate thought,
and are worthy of your consideration for what you, and/or your family would find useful.
Some of you may have already commented on the 150 previous comments,
but it is still worthy of review.
The discussion includes 'Bug out', 'Every Day Carry'(EDC), and Get Home Bag contents.
Better late than never.
And don’t forget the FR Million patriot MarchOnDC09122009 railing against Obola and his damned deliberate failure Affordable Care Act!
The fact that “we” don’t light up the switchboards and March on State houses, quickens guarantee collapse of this Free Republic.
At least the replacement for dying Constitutional government will be exciting...
RE: “We should have a reunion of members who were @ the DC March for Justice? in 1998 :)”
Boots on ground time tested Mar-pat camo poncho & poncho liner, mylar space blanket with 55 gal contractor trash bag - Ideal <2 lb. minimalist discrete shelter sleep system.
Well illustrated in the movie The Accountant..

>Be the grey man. < First time I have heard this. What does it mean?
Be invisible, dont stand out in a crowd, be ignorable.
Agreed. Some of us got recycled in 2008. After 7+ years on FR original sign up was 6 months prior to 9/11 in my personal experience. If you supported trump in 2008 you wouldnt be here either. Just the facts. Sometime time reality hits truth. Bush failed, Juan was a complete douch and depending on how vocal you were that caused issues. Its cool but really. Btw Sara was cool. Feel I should be offered my original sign up date or my original sign in but thats cool too. Trolls were fishing hard. Many disappear troopers loyal FR got obliterated after 2008. Go figure. Those were rough days.
I never care about sign up dates. The character of the poster I care about. .
2 cents. Add 3 more and you got a nickel. Still aint worth shit.
True that !
'Grey man' includes that manner in which you carry yourself (posture),
your choice of clothing and clothing color,
and includes selection of shoes, hat, gloves, and backpack.
If people are wearing sneakers, you don't travel the city with Timberline boots, or sparklie new Nike's.
If youthful gangs rule that area, you are familiar with their 'colors', and how and where they wear them.
You imitate like a chameleon, and look like you belong there.
You blend in .. and are quickly overlooked and forgotten - you become 'grey'.
I hope to stay in place but if I have to leave I have a 3 day pack. I can add on a larger one for 5-7 days and a long term rolling duffel if LONG term. Ocean shore is limiting in escape routes. Few duplicate items. Extra food, batteries, more rope etc is added right up to the small tent. Dog food is heavier than mine. Any suggestions?
I do4X a year updates to supplies.
