Grab your winter coat, some hot cocoa and your kid's telescope on Sunday and head outside because the next super blood wolf moon wont be showing its face for another 18 years.
While the celestial phenomenon sounds like something youd read in a teenage werewolf novel, its actual meaning is derived from multiple sources.
The term "super" refers to the placement of the moon. This month, the moon will be at its closest point to Earths orbit, making it appear larger than normal.
The term "wolf" derives from the Native American nickname for January's full moon and the wolves who "howled in hunger outside the villages," according to the Farmers Almanac.
The term "blood" comes from the way the suns light bends and refracts off the Earth's atmosphere and onto the moons surface, making it appear red or copper at times. This phenomenon, called "Rayleigh scattering," is also what causes the beautiful colors of our sunrises and sunsets as well as what makes our sky look blue. NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California notes, however, that clouds, dust, ash and organic matter in Earths atmosphere may change the expected color of a super wolf blood moon.
"Were not sure what color it will turn. It really depends on the earths atmosphere, whether weve had storms, volcanic eruptions, all sorts of things," explained Dr. David Reitzel, an astronomer and lecturer at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

What direction should I try to lookout a window near NYCity? Its too Cold to go out. Intermittent clouds make it more challenging too.
Its just about totally eclipsed now. Hazy cloud cover.
Nice!
We’re near DC, and our balcony faces South. The moon is almost directly over top of us. We have to stick our heads out over the railing and look up ;-)
It’s getting reddish now...
I hope every lib-nut watching this thinks of Trump. Orange man changed the moon!
Thanks
Thanks.
We just went out and looked. It’s about three quarters full and definitely reddish.
Totality.
Good timing! I just watched it go full eclipse a few minutes ago.
If youre looking at it with binoculars or a telescope, it wont mean anything.
a little liquid on either will mean afixture to ones face in Midwest area
Witnessing full eclipse now.
Awesome.
-10 degrees here.
South and a little east.
Found that through personal experience? I found the same will happen with the tongue on a tetherball pole in the winter.
All that you touch
And all that you see
All that you taste
All you feel
And all that you love
And all that you hate
All you distrust
All you save
And all that you give
And all that you deal
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal
And all you create
And all you destroy
And all that you do
And all that you say
And all that you eat
And everyone you meet (everyone you meet)
And all that you slight
And everyone you fight
And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that’s to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon
