After hammering California with rain and snow, a 'blockbuster' winter storm is taking aim on the East, where as much as 40 inches of snow could fall. After the storm rolls through, bitterly cold air straight from the Arctic will roar in, bringing below-freezing temperatures to 200 million Americans.
"Freezing rain, heavy snow, and heavy rain are expected in association with the storm system through the central and eastern U.S. over the next few days," the National Weather Service warned.
On Friday, the heaviest snow Friday will hit South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa, AccuWeather said.
Then, the storm will wind up and roar into the Northeast and New England.
AccuWeather said 40 inches is possible in parts of northern New England, while close to 30 inches of snow may fall on parts of central and northern New York state and the northern tier of Pennsylvania. Snowfall rates could reach 2-3 inches per hour.
The storm "will be a blockbuster in terms of impact and dangerous conditions," said AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

You might be right, but the forecast has been changing constantly since then. Where I am, the prediction has been anywhere from a couple of inches to a couple of feet. Right now, they aren’t even guessing on a total snowfall.
As a former Marine, one of my great disappointments while I lived in WDC was the closing of Quantico when there was snow. TOUGHEN UP for Goodness’ sake!
I live here too, but the Drought will only be over when Governor Nuisance, Albert Goron, the SPLC and the 9th Circuit say its over.
The storm is named “Harper”.
That is exactly the kind of wind that knocked down branches & crossed wires & started the N Cali fires.
P G & E didn’t start the fires-—the WIND did.
We have already had winter storm Eboni. Did you miss that one? I sure did.

LOL! I hadn’t heard that and appreciate the info!!
That's what it says in Ecclesiastes 1:9 too.
The brutal cold and snow storms of 1977 was considered proof we were entering a new ICE AGE!
At age 78, I am lucky to remember what I ate for breakfast haha..But I remember first snow storm from 58 years ago...what is wrong with this equation?
I spent 2 years in Knoxville TN where they closed the University because an inch of snow was predicted. It was also illegal to throw a snowball. Ask me how I know.
That’s shocking. Are these the same guys they send to the Marine Mountain Warfare Center in Bridgeport, CA to train in freezing mountain conditions?
Back in winter ‘77 - ‘78, there was a good blizzard in northern Ohio. I got up, got ready, and drove to work. Roads were a bit slippery and there were some drifts, but no big deal for this mountain guy. Got to work and the guard said “What are you doing here? Work’s been cancelled.” I’d never heard of work being closed before that. What a bunch of pussies. Seems like things shut down now if the sky gets cloudy and dark.
LOL...isn’t that the truth? Strange how the brain works (or doesn’t).
What? Its winter again? That explains why I spent 4 days without power and heat! (11 Inches total wet snow.)
This storm is predicted to bring 4 to 6 inches to Kansas and Missouri. That is not the problem, which is the winds that will gust to 30 to 40 MPH and bring down weak branches that have not already fallen.
I guess stock up on propane for my Mr Heater Buddy & check make certain all my batteries are charged!
(Go get more instant cocoa! And chocolate!)
"Harper?"
We are going to select an insert for one of our fireplaces tomorrow.
Climate warming. I mean, global change. I mean, clobal charming.
