After hammering California with rain and snow, a 'blockbuster' winter storm is taking aim on the East, where as much as 40 inches of snow could fall. After the storm rolls through, bitterly cold air straight from the Arctic will roar in, bringing below-freezing temperatures to 200 million Americans.
"Freezing rain, heavy snow, and heavy rain are expected in association with the storm system through the central and eastern U.S. over the next few days," the National Weather Service warned.
On Friday, the heaviest snow Friday will hit South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa, AccuWeather said.
Then, the storm will wind up and roar into the Northeast and New England.
AccuWeather said 40 inches is possible in parts of northern New England, while close to 30 inches of snow may fall on parts of central and northern New York state and the northern tier of Pennsylvania. Snowfall rates could reach 2-3 inches per hour.
The storm "will be a blockbuster in terms of impact and dangerous conditions," said AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

I was calling this out a week ago, and some of my fellow freepers said I didn’t know what I was talking about - storms in California don’t go east .. or so they said
I’m sitting at home watching the global warming fall. Three inches of new stuff with another five to come. Heads up, folks, this one’s on the way.
Why does the weather channel name snowstorms? And how do they make sure to have diversity among ethnicity, gender, etc . so they won’t be called bigoted????

Are they hyping snowstorms, to make it sound as if such storms never happened before, so the storm must be due to global warming? What’s really going on here?

Good question. I've never heard of a winter storm (or a hurricane) named Shaniqua or Lafawnduh.
Aw, I'm a sharing kind of guy. I wouldn't mind if it stuck around for a while but then I'm sitting in my living room making another cup of coffee, not flailing around in it trying to make a living. From this vantage it's beautiful, but sooner or later I'll have to wind up the old snow blower. Which I have named Algore.
