Next Thursday, I will get a vagina. The procedure will last around six hours, and I will be in recovery for at least three months. Until the day I die, my body will regard the vagina as a wound; as a result, it will require regular, painful attention to maintain. This is what I want, but there is no guarantee it will make me happier. In fact, I dont expect it to. That shouldnt disqualify me from getting it.
I like to say that being trans is the second-worst thing that ever happened to me. (The worst was being born a boy.) Dysphoria is notoriously difficult to describe to those who havent experienced it, like a flavor. Its official definition the distress some transgender people feel at the incongruence between the gender they express and the gender theyve been socially assigned does little justice to the feeling.
But in my experience, at least: Dysphoria feels like being unable to get warm, no matter how many layers you put on. It feels like hunger without appetite. It feels like getting on an airplane to fly home, only to realize mid-flight that this is it: Youre going to spend the rest of your life on an airplane. It feels like grieving. It feels like having nothing to grieve.
Many conservatives call this crazy. A popular right-wing narrative holds that gender dysphoria is a clinical delusion; hence, feeding that delusion with hormones and surgeries constitutes a violation of medical ethics. Just ask the Heritage Foundation fellow Ryan T. Anderson, whose book When Harry Became Sally draws heavily on the work of Dr. Paul McHugh, the psychiatrist who shut down the gender identity clinic at Johns Hopkins in 1979 on the grounds that trans-affirmative care meant cooperating with a mental illness.

Your body is transphobic, obviously.
To paraphrase Woody of Toy Story.
YOU
ARE
A
MAN
You have a penis which probably perfectly healthy and functional. I get it - you feel feminine. I feel rich too - it doesnt mean we get what we fantasize about.
NY Slimes pandering to mental illness.... what a surprise.
Tough sh!t.
Play psychotic games, win psychotic prizes.
Typical Liberal: "You go girl!"
My brother was a boy trapped in a woman’s body, too.
Then, he was born.
It comes down to chromosomes: XX or XY. Ain’t no operation will change that. This guy does have a mental illness.
I would like to slap this guy and his doctor. There are lots of others I woul like to slap as well, like the New York Times editorial board. And any one else there that thought this was a good story. Then i would like to slap anyone who told this person he could not be happy with who he is. There is no such thing has fixing your sex. Its just doctors playing around at your expense.
Will there be a follow up article after the inevitable suicide?
This guy is crazy as hell and pretty much admits it. In fact, he says he wasn’t suicidal til he started taking hormones, and now he is. It is medical malpractice to give him these drugs. Period. End of story. He needs to be in an asylum, and his physicians need to be in jail. For good.
All to collect disability.
Wife works in the mental healthcare field. The first thing these mental people will say to get their way is “I am disabled.”
If you have one, youre a male, if you dont, you are a female, pretty straight forward in my book.
The mentally ill now rule over us.
The surgeon’s knife can’t cut chromosomes.
FUBAR...big time!
NY Slimes pandering to mental illness.... what a surprise.
In a way, this is all enabled by Technology. Back in the day, someone who had these funny ideas would be put in an asylum or left to starve. Given those choices, people got their act together or died. No longer.
You cant fix a mental delusion by pandering to it...
Folks involved in doing this are engaging in malpractice and abuse
Oh the quack is right there with it. He is collecting the medicaid payments for the operation. Big money in that.
I see that in medicare payments gong to my own doctor. 169 bucks for 10 minutes? Really? I can see 60, maybe 70 bucks, but 169? Just to re-up my medications?
Its like the furniture adds saying that they have sales for furniture at 60 to 70% off. What they dont tell you is that they mark that crap up 100 plus per cent in the first place.
Got medicare? GOOD! Lets make the bill 169 bucks instead of 70. They collect 80% of 169 from medicare and the rest from the coverage insurance after the deductable.
