The owner of a pizzeria in New Paltz, New York, said protesters vandalized the American flag mural painted on the side of her building because they believed it represented "a political position."
Maria Lisante, who owns La Bella Pizza Bistro, said on “The Ingraham Angle” on Friday that the protesters were "opposed" to the flag and thus defaced the mural.
"They didn't want a flag. They thought that it meant a political position and they were opposed," Lisante said.

Several Freepers have asked the question, when will the Civil War begin? It is already here. It isn’t being fought with large military armed rebel groups assaulting bridges and trying to take territory by force of arms. It is being fought by Antifa and BLM and Democratic Representatives and Senators, who are trying to take territory by force, or theft, or coercion. Their strength is that conservatives, their enemy, rely on civil authorities who have been corrupted for conservative protection. Thus, the police are withdrawn from riots to “give the rioters some space.”
I am not suggesting that we become equally violent. I am suggesting that we need new laws or enforcement of existing laws. We need new leadership in blighted Democratic controlled areas.
The new rebels do not want autonomy from the US government. Instead, they want to control the US government and subvert it to their will. If they had autonomy they would have to come up with their own money and programs. Instead, they want the tax money of the larger population and they want to bend government programs to benefit just them. And, by them, I mean anybody not “white” (whatever that means to them as it changes from day to day) and not heterosexual. (Actually, not any kind of sexual that is not “their” kind of sexual. That also changes from day to day.)
We, the public, are suffering these outrages because those we have elected to office to uphold the law and civic order are afraid or unwilling to do so.
New Paltz has a 31% in poverty, (IE:on welfare) and it’s a college town.

As you say, fighting the enemy forces using law enforcement is problematic in some areas (Portland, for example) because law enforcement, particularly in blue urban areas, is under the thumb of Leftist local governments (who are counted among the enemy).
In those areas controlled by Liberal governments unwilling to prevent violence by Antifa, BLM, etc., counter force violence by civilian groups may be the only solution available.

Counter force by civilians, especially groups, in liberal controlled areas will be met with military type suppression. Such action would, almost by definition, take place against protected minorities and would be deemed “hate.” The only thing the average person can do to protect themselves in a liberal controlled area is leave.
This will never happen.
I used to think that way (it's the only civilized solution), but it won't happen...and the Left knows it (which is why they feel free to behave as they like).
And relying on the police won't work because the Left can easily wear out our police by using false alarms and probing the law without actually breaking it.
The Left's violent footsoldiers have to be infiltrated (for inside knowledge of their plans) and then met with force when they stage an operation.

When I say counter force, I don't mean obvious (i.e. uniformed).
In Liberal areas, counter force troops would have to quickly and easily blend back into the crowd.
I have watched some videos of the Proud Boys. They are much too obvious too avoid the kind of problems you are suggesting.
If they (the Proud Boy types) really want to be effective, they need a very low profile or at least take a two pronged approach in which some of their troops are high profile and some are almost invisible.
As an aside, there is no doubt that "high profile" behavior of Proud Boy types of groups is the best way, if not the only way, to recruit.
