The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.
Green house temps have been down to 54 degrees at night, and only got warm on the couple of afternoon days that the sun peaked out. Still, it's better than the outdoor temps.
Hubby has about half his gardens planted in rye. My lemon tree is not doing well. I repotted it this spring in a slightly bigger pot. Usually it puts on a bunch of new leaves, and even has blooms and fruit started, it also has some yellow spots on leaves. I think it needs some nutrients, so I'm trying some liquid fertilizer with trace minerals.
Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Pinging the list. I had requests for adding several names to the list, and have done that, if I didn’t get everyone, please send me a FRmail.
Snow everywhere. The garden is gone for this year. Two tomato plants in containers and one producing indoors. Tried to start early this year. Have to start more indoors in containers next year. Only a usual 3 months between freezes, but sometimes 4 months. Still not much time here at 8,500 ft elevation in the Colorado Rockies.
The typhoon last month stressed the mango tree and it is dropping all its leaves and blew over all the papayas.
This is the rainiest rainy season in several years. The has to be mowed every 4 days or so.
Other than that, cantaloupes, watermelons and bell peppers are up
Harvested pumpkins and green cherry tomatoes today. I think I will carve one pumpkin and use two tomatoes for eyes. Thanks for the idea.
Also, building a green house at this time.
Yanked 4 sweet pepper plants yesterday before the frost hit and am hoping to overwinter them in my basement. I also tried to do the same for some tomato suckers but they don’t look well already, we shall see.
Guess we got a week’s reprieve - 60-62 - think we hit 66 today.
So I’m leaving the remaining tomatoes and peppers on the vines for a few days. And then I’ll look at the forecast in a few days.
You for sure have quite a few challenges given your climate. Given the low sun activity, we all have to adjust somewhat to earlier maturing and extending the season with indoor/greenhouses/hoops etc.
Still, You have a very short season even under normal situations.
Sorry to hear about the mango and papaya.
Did you take a lot of leaves off the tomatoes? I usually strip most of the lower leaves, and stick them in dirt so that many joints are in the soil.
I think you will like your greenhouse.
We also got a reprieve, but tomorrow it ends, so I’ll have to check and see what else I need to bring in.
Yes, I have a wood-burning stove insert in my fireplace. I also have propane baseboard hot water heating, but try to keep the thermostats low sow the wood-burning stove does the heavy work. I cut and use about 6-7 cords of wood every winter.
We are going to get a fireplace insert too. We have 2 fireplaces, and they have fans built in, but the inserts would be even better.
When the kids were at home we used to have both fireplace going and a woodstove in the basement. Hubby would crank it up so much that the kids ran around in summer shorts and t shirts.
We are all electric, and now we just keep the heat turned down, and use a small heater in the computer area, but we still want better wood heat in case of electrical outages.
Hi Everybody!
((((HUGS))))
Well, we have had our first freeze. Not a big one. 32 degrees and then it warmed right up to 50.
But it was enough to send a chill though my bones.
I’ve used both of these:

Lost my big lime tree a few weeks ago. Death in the family and it didn’t get watered in all the resulting chaos. I’m going to try to get a cutting from one of the rootings I’ve given away over the years.
I often wear shorts and T-shirts inside in winter when it is down to -20F outside. I also have two fireplaces, but the 2nd one has a wood pellet stove with a broken auger that I need to fix. The wood stove can keep the house pretty warm. The house is about 3,200 sq ft, but we keep unused rooms closed and the thermostats turned way down in those zones. Right now it is about 32F outside, but with the wood stove it is about 83F inside just running on medium.. And I am wearing a T-shirt.
Cool temps are early this year. No sign of Indian Summer either.
Thanks for the links, I check them out more tomorrow. I’m about out of steam for the day. Going to go to bed soon, I think.
I like to look at the fire in the fireplace, and read a good book when the weather is cold.
