A 30-year-old Connecticut woman severely injured her hand and her face when she lit a quarter stick of dynamite that she mistook for a candle after thunderstorms knocked out power Thursday night.
Police said the woman was injured around 9:20 p.m. at the familys Lindley Street home in Bridgeport and her husband and two children were home when the horrific accident happened.
Police have investigated and said the family had intended to buy emergency lighting from Home Depot, but the store was closed, according to police.
Then, they remembered seeing something in the basement that they thought were candles. The family bought the home two years ago and the previous residents or owners had left them behind, according to police.

Dynamite? Probably a large flash-powder firecracker, especially if it had a fuse protruding. Real dynamite needs a cap and fuze, and would not be put into long term storage with a cap.
A quarter stick of real dynamite would do more damage.
The “quarter stick” firecracker held 10 grams of flash powder, nothing to mess with, but nowhere the power of dynamite.

Who in the Wild Wild World of Sports keeps capped and fused dynamite with candles? Who can't tell the difference between a fuse and a candle wick? Who can't tell the difference between a candle and a stick of dynamite, even in the dark? Who has that around like that who doesn't know you could just pull the fuse and cap out of the dynamite?
I think there is more to the story.

I thought a 1/4 stick of dynamite was called an M-80.

Is a quarter stick of dynamite an M80 or an M100?
I was going to say, “who leaves dynamite lying around”, but M80’s are common fireworks fair around Independence Day.

People from my generation know the difference between dynamite and candles. These younger generations don’t know basic useful information.

Once upon a time Hollywood produced Westerns.
And everybody knew what dynamite/explosives were.

My first thought. Real Dynamite would not have just damaged her hand, it would have killed her.
