My next door neighbor used to get me quarter sticks for the 4th of July. One of them would have killed her also. More likely that it was an M80 or something similar.

Police have investigated and said the family had intended to buy emergency lighting from Home Depot, but the store was closed, according to police.

...

With the cheap cost of LED flashlights people should use them instead of candles.

Other than that, FReepers have been very entertaining on this thread.

My mother always told me “don’t put dynamite in the candle sticks, son.”

OK, I've got two questions:

1. Is/was she a dem? and

2. Does this qualify her for a Darwin Award?

I thought a 1/4 stick of dynamite was called an M-80.

Some people call various big powder firecrackers a "1/4 stick" but none of them are dynamite. They don't have nitroglycerin. If it did, she would be in bits and pieces.

I love the sound of dynamite in the morning. It is such a wonderful THUMP, or maybe more of a CRUMP.

Sounds like the firecracker that was called a Baby Giant, when I was a kid. It was red and about 2” long and 1/2” diameter. The blast was nearly = to 1/4 stick of dynamite.

Didn’t see any damage from the outside pics shown in the video. Wondering about the actual size of explosive. Seems some windows at least should have been blown out, and also some injuries to others inside. Hearing damages at least

I doubt that. A 1/4 stick of dynamite would do a heck of a lot more damage than blow off part of her hand.

The average stick of dynamite is 8 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. This gives a volume of about 6 cubic inches, not taking into account the thickness of the tube the explosive is in. The Baby Giant would have a volume of 0.4 cubic inches. This means a quarter stick of dynamite would have a volume of 1.5 cubic inches, which is about 3.8 times the volume of the Baby.

Next, how more powerful is dynamite than black powder? I found that workers digging tunnels could move about 3.5 times faster using dynamite compared to black poweder.

Black powder vs. dynamite

Therefore, an actual 1/4 stick of dynamite would be roughly 13 times more powerful (3.8 times 3.5) than a black powder Baby Giant.

These are all hasty approximations but it is obvious that the 1/4 stick of dynamite is MUCH more powerful than the so-called "1/4 stick" black powder firecracker.
