Middle-aged people who get roughly half their daily calories from carbohydrates live several years longer on average than those with meat-heavy low-carb diets, researchers reported Friday. The findings, published in The Lancet medical journal, challenge a trend in Europe and North America toward so-called Paleo diets that shun carbohydrates in favour of animal protein and fat. Proponents of these "Stone Age" diets argue that the rapid shift 10,000 years ago -- with the advent of agriculture -- to grains, dairy and legumes has not allowed the human body enough time to adapt to these high-carb foods. For the study, receiving less than 40 percent of total energy intake from carbohydrates qualified as a low-carb regimen, though many such diets reduce the share to 20 percent or less. At the other extreme, a 70 percent or higher share of carbohydrates -- such as pasta, rice, cakes, sugary drinks -- can also reduce longevity, but by far less, the scientists found. "Low-carb diets that replace carbohydrates with protein or fat are gaining widespread popularity as a health and weight loss strategy," said lead author Sara Seidelmann, a researcher at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "However, our data suggests that animal-based low carbohydrate diets might be associated with shorter overall lifespan and should be discouraged." Replacing meat with plant-based fats (such as avocados and nuts) and proteins (such as soy products and lentils) reduces the risk of mortality, Seidelmann and her team found. The optimal balance of food groups for longevity remains hotly debated. Many studies have concluded that eating carbohydrates in moderation -- 45 to 55 percent of total calorie intake -- is best, but others report improved short-term, cardio-metabolic health with high-protein, high-fat diets.

For every expert there is an equal and opposite expert.
Yeah - I call BS.
Theyre sampling an average of averages of self reported dietary information from over several generations.
They dont factor in health, genetics or even societal factors.
I downloaded and printed the 10 page study.
They controlled (means compared equally) on sex, smoking, BMI and many other variables.
Given that, the low carbohydrate diet was still 37% carbohydrate, or 160 grams of carbs per day. Those of us who know Keto know that this is no low carb. The high carb dieters were 300 grams per day.
However, after 25 years the low carb dieters lived 4 years less than the medium carb dieters.
But wait: if the low carb dieter substituted bacon and dairy for their carbs, they lived even shorter lives. The low carb dieter who substituted avocado, olive oil and nuts lived as long as the medium carb dieters.
Roughly speaking.
All methods of eating that focus on macro nutrients (protein, carb, fat) will encourage deficit in important nutrients to the body - but focusing on micro nutrients and eating more whole/original foods the body was designed to recognize so it can properly utilize the nutrients it needs seems to make most sense. When focusing on eating for micro nutrients in foods the body was designed to eat you usually get plenty of healthful protein fat and carbs.
much of todays grocery store and resturaunt foods are like trying to put hummus in your gas tank and wondering why your car doesn’t run - plenty of oil just a wrong kind and too many extras the car can’t recognize or use.
"They" want you sick and addicted to their pill factory.
Living in an immediate post ice age environment in small hunter gatherer groups and an infant mortality rate higher than 50% had some effect on "left expectancy" too.
There are vegetarian exercise freaks who drop dead from heart attacks. And relatives on my father's side in Kentucky lived into their nineties on a lifestyle of hard work and a diet that featured savory baked corn bread slathered in butter, buttermilk biscuits seasoned with salt cured country ham and red eye gravy, fresh chicken double breaded in flour and fried in lard, turnip greens cooked in bacon fat, green beans the same, fresh and home canned tomatoes, and corn, corn, and more corn.
Frankly, I think genetics plays a far more powerful role in how long a person lives than it's given credit for. And as long as someone eats in moderation when hungry and remains active their chances are as good as nature will allow. But bottom line, nobody gets out of here alive so you may as well do your best to enjoy the time you're given. And that includes eating what you crave when you crave it. If that balloons you into morbid obesity then adjustment may be required.
So the govt pyramid is right?
I dont know about paleo but keto is mod protein. My plate used to be covered by a steak. But it is mostly veg and meat now. It is high fat but most of the fat is from non meat sources. Coconut oil, nuts, olives, avocados. Cut the sugar, bread, starches.
3 months i lost 10 lbs and my energy doubled
In Paleo times, you had to do a lot of walking, whether to hunt the meat, or to gather the veggies. They didn’t have delivery to your couch.
>>So bacon is good or bad?
GOOOD!!!!!!!<<
Bacon is all 4 food groups. In fact it IS a food group that tops the others.
I get all the carbs I need through beer. Protein through meat.
“So, how much are you BEING PAID for making the above claim?”
You’re right, I earn zip. This way of eating is nothing new.
I learned how the Eskimos thrived on nothing but meat & blubber after reading this awesome book written in the early 1900’s.

If you look back just 150-200 years one can see we did not have so much mental illness, obesity, auto-immune illnesses, etc. IMO, one of the biggest lies in life today is the Standard America Diet.
one teaspoon of sugar = 4 grams of carbs
That's 40 teaspoons of sugar, or 13 tablespoons of sugar - almost a cup of sugar.
"low-carb"
“Life” expectancy. Left expectancy is always expecting Leftists to preach people into hunger and sacrifice for the “good of all”.
Hmmmm. Do you know what the minimum daily carb intake requirement is?
zero
I knew it was gonna get me some day! I am almost 72, ate lead based paint as a child, breathed asbestos cement board, worked with white lead paint and lubricant, worked in a power plant with lots of nasty stuff, still here!
Oh, I still have all my teeth. Must have been that polluted well water from the High Plains that did it with all that natural fluoride. Same for brother and sister.
“Thats awesome sir.”
Thank you. I’m fortunate to have come across this way of eating before I had done irreparable damage to my body.
It’s interesting you mention how Bible people ate. In Genesis we learn God is pleases with Able’s offering of the “fat of the land’ & rejected Cain’s grains & veggies. Seems there is quite a lesson there if we but look deep enough.
Keep doing what you are doing. Please don’t add the poison back into your diet. You will continue to feel better over time, I expect.
Good luck to you on your journey.
Don't hijack the thread talking about my organic gluten free probiotic health beverage.
Thanks for doing the heavy lifting : )
I don’t think the study actually sampled the benefits of low carb at the level of carbohydrate ingestion they utilized so the study is very misleading to even refer to low carb vs high carb. The headlines and hype may dissuade people, from following a diet that may be much more healthy for them. Most lo carb people keep below 50gms although it’s an individual decision as to what level works best for that person.
Dietary studies are suspect to begin with because they are short term, too many variables, rely on self reporting and low numbers of participants.
